My Taskmanager doesn't work.

Finally got a new PC, and there are some problems. One thing that's particularily annoying is that when I try to use the taskmanager, the screen just turns black for half a second, and then nothing happens. Can I just download a file from the net and put it in my Windows dir?

It was like that when I got it three days ago. It's a fixer-upper, so there are some problems here and there.

I bought it from a guy at work who hasn't really used it. Windows and the newest service pack was installed a week ago or something, and the only other thing on the computer was an Unreal demo he threw in to test the video card. Maybe I can just run a Windows CD and do a repair or something.

Do what whoreable says. Reinstalling Windows is the only sure-fire way to fix anything that's really broken.

repairs are rarely worth it. If you had alot of stuff you wanted to save then i would say try it but since it is new and you probaly dont have tons of data on it yet i would just reinstall.

I remember my manager screwing me over too, but my screen didn't turn black. It just failed to stay open in the window when i pressed Ctr Alt Delete

Win XP. I'll be installing an extra HD today which will be the primary, so I'll probably just install the OS on that one.

Fuck, I reinstalled Windows, and for some reason there aren't any drivers for sound cards, printers or even USB ports on the Win CD. When I try to download drivers from the developer's site, I'm told I have to download it through Microsoft Windows Update, and that is only available if you have an internet connection through the computer you want to update. Which I don't. So I can't get the fucking drivers. I still have the old version of Windows installed on the old HD, any way I can extract the drivers from somewhere on that disc?

Windows XP Professional Edition (full install). I just downloaded a bunch of generic USB drivers as well as a couple of Windows update thingies that may contain some files I need, hopefully one of them will work or I'll have to WALK THREE MILES TO DOWNLOAD MORE AND THEN WALK BACK >: >:

Ok you are obviously not a geek like me but before I reinstall windows I ensure I at least have all the drivers I require. If not the latest at least the old ones on cd. You simply just burn it all on cd or put it on another hard drive partition.

You only really need to install critical updates. Make sure you also have a firewall and anti virus. But that should go without saying. Don't forget to defrag your hard drives at least once a month.

I never formatted the old disc with Windows on it, I'm just trying to install it on another disc, and assumed WinXP would include standardized USB drivers. If you know where to locate the drivers on the old disc, it would help a lot. :(

Try installing your sound card with the generic Windows drivers... what kind of card is it anyways? If they're not on the disk already, it must either be a) really new or b) really weird.

A VIA card in the motherboard. And the problem wasn't just that the drivers weren't included, NO drivers for ANY type of unit were included. I tried reinstalling three times, and still no luck. I finally found a driver that worked on the net the other day.
