I turned it off last night, and everything was fine. I turn in on this morning, and it won't even load Windows. Says some file has missing or corrupted. So how can I get this POS to start again?

Should have made an ERD. What version of windows it?

You can try reinstalling Windows again overtop of the existing version. That should replace any system files that are missing.

I know at least how to get to where you choose which devices the PC boots from, and in what order, but all it has is "CD-ROM", and the CD-ROM in the master spot is the one I mentioned in the other thread; the one that ain't a'workin. Do I need to just pull it out, plug the other one into the master spot on the cable, and change its jumpers?

Because when I was at Best Buy the next day to look for a new one, I wasn't sure which was the best CD/RW to get, there being ones that seemed to be identical, except for price and brand name. Then, when pub mentioned cleaning the lens, I was thrust further into doubt, as I've never had the idea in my head to try and clean the lens (nor do I know how to go about doing so).

I was going to ask about cleaning the lens when this other problem came up, so I figured I'd try to take care of it first, and then deal with that infernal CD-ROM.

Buy a Laser cleaner disc. There are ones for cd-rom's but watch out cause they can fuck the cd-rom's anyway. Your probably better off buying a new one. Try LG . They make a fairly reliable burner.

Anyway, so do I want to setup win 2k, or do one of the repair options, because I can't figure out which of the repair options I should use?

You could try repair first... I've never had to repair a Win2K install before, but if there's a system restore thing, that should do the trick.

If that doesn't work, you'll have to reinstall the whole thing. Just make sure that you don't format the drive. :(

repair in win2k rarely works, and there is no system restores, thats in me and xp.

Well then, that brings me to the step that always gives me trouble (I've had to reinstall win2k a couple times now): when I choose the setup option, it says that since there's a WINNT folder already (but no, it can't detect the win 2k files that are already there), all the files, folders, apps, etc. will be deleted, and yet the previous step asked if I wanted to format the partition in question. Should I just install it (again) in that folder, or just name a new one?

I'd try installing it in the same folder.

It doesnt actually clean the lense. It is supposed to re-align the laser :/. My bad for poorly wording it.

Alright, so I took chimp's advice, and everything is almost back to normal (had to reinstall a bunch of stuff on account of the deleted WINNT folder, but that wasn't too difficult). Now, though, I can't get onto the internet for some reason. Hours early, I could without fail, but now, nothing. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling my network card drivers, but with no success. So now what the hell is going on?

You will have to make sure that you have the correct network protocols installed. You will need TCP/IP installed and have it bound to your network card.

If I remember correctly, some versions of Windows didn't do this automatically.

"add remove programs" for "networking" or "add new hardware" if the cards not installed. if that doesnt work "i damn thee computer"

Umm... I've been spoiled by XP, but I'll try to remember as best I can.

You need to view the properties for your network connection in My Network, and ensure that TCP/IP is in the list of protocols that comes up on the first panel (I think it's the first panel anyways.).

If not, you will need to install it (very simple to do... click Add, select Protocols, select TCP/IP).

If it is installed, you need to make sure that it's bound to your network card. One of the tabs should have something to do with bindings, or you may have to go into the properties for TCP/IP. Just make sure that it's checked on for your network card, and checked OFF for any file and printer sharing that you might have on your network.

i guess you are using high speed internet.

first see if you get an ip address.

click start go to run type cmd hit ok.

type ipconfig see what your ip address is. all zeros is bad.

start with taht and see what you can get.

Nevermind. I installed win 2k again, and now the internet works again for some reason. Computers are a mystery to me.
