I don't recall a thread about this here... Anyway, I got an invite last week and so far it seems pretty cool. Anybody else try it out yet?

even cooler for the lazy fags is that the other major freemails (hotmail y yahoo) are doing their own "we are not as good as gmail but please dont leave us" stunts

i also heard that hotmail is supposedly blocking gmail invites :\

Whenever I log into my Hotmail my pop up blocker goes insane and my task bar disapears, so I'm looking for a new e-mail. :(

yea yahoo is now 100 megs free i think, and hotmail will be 250 megs free very shortly... the $19.95 "Plus" hotmail accounts will now be bumped to 2GB as opposed to the 10 megs they're currently at :lol

i think google should release an instant messenger to go along with gmail... hotmail/msn would be fucked with a capital F.

Gmail's pretty sweet. Obviously it could use a more expanded address book system, and POP support, which will come eventually. It'd also be nice if they implemented a directory tree or some sort of conversations relationship map if you send an email to a bunch of people and sub-conversations develop from there.

I've had a friend offer me an invite to gmail, but I haven't taken him up on it yet. Hotmail has its flaws, but I've not really cared enough to try a different mailhost. Aside from the huge storage space, are there any other significant advantages to using gmail?

It organizes emails into conversations, so if you and a friend send a dozen reply to's it'll organize the entire conversation for you. Each of the messages in the conversation would have it's own tab that you could click, kinda like how ICQ used to work when you looked at the history of a convo.

Other than that, a few other features like shortcut keys, and in the mailboxes the first part of the message is previewed, next to the subject header.

How fast is it?

I've sent stuff to Hotmail accounts before, and it has taken over a day for stuff to arrive.
