Don't take no crap jimbutsu, I'm with you. You're exactly the type me and others will obsessively cling to when you give it to all these asshole vets around here, with your infallible logic and misplaced philosophical jargon. Ok what you need is your very own unique onomatopoeic insult, prefferably a combination of two or more (if you're feeling adventurous) words like 'fucktard' or 'cuntflap' or something similar. Seeing how your angle is being extremely politically correct, I guess the number of bad words you can say is severily limited, so maybe "jerkoid"? I think that's good. Jerkoid. Has something to it. Now go! Remember, we're with you!

jimbutsu
Feb 9th, 2005, 11:21 AM
Wow. So far you've misused "jargon" and "onomatopoea." You sure showed me, what with your inability to use words correctly! Or are these "new" usages that someone who (you assume) is "new" to the net wouldn't know about yet???

Also, my "angle" has nothing to do with political correctness. I really don't take much stock in PC, I just wanted to know why everyone had the same tired schtick.

I think I get it now, and I'm sad for you. But still, the love flows.

And I wouldn't ever have a "Bitch" button, partly because I'm not a chick, but I did get a T-shirt way back when that says "CYNICAL BASTARD".....

What's funny is that I didn't misuse these words, especially onomatopoeia since it holds a secondary meaning of the practice of creating words of all kinds, not just those that immitate sounds and the like. What's more, onomatopoeia is a greek word, from onoma, that means name, and the verb poio, which means to do, create or practise. I know this because I happen to be greek. To drive the point a bit excessively, philosophy can and has been said to have it's very own jargon, which the recent wave of post-modernist analysis has extensively focused it's dissassembling prowess on, trying to, essentially, paint the process of analytical philosophy as hollow and vacant as it's jargon, based on various recursive linguistic tricks and scemes. Now, I'd appreciate it if you'd take this paper back, and change my grade from this C to at least a respectable A - thank you very much. Fag.

jimbutsu
Feb 10th, 2005, 11:19 AM
Nope. Sorry.

I can't find any other definition for onomatopoeia in any online or print source than "words for sounds." This isn't necessarily true on other languages that use those roots, mind you, but just because you say it doesn't make it true.

As for jargon, I might give you that one because of the subdefinition of the word that involves "convoluted phrasing," but there's nothing philosophical about that context, nor did I use any "jargon" in the context you referred to(words specific to a discipline), so you still missed the mark.

B minus, at best.

Also, I'm thinking of "crapsack" or "fuckstain" as my consonant-heavy signature phrase. They might not be Pulitzer material, but at least it's more imaginative than "fag."

Helm
Feb 10th, 2005, 11:40 AM
I could explain how linguistic experts have come to a general agreement on how the vast majority of words in every language are products of the onomatopoeic process, besides a very few basic signifiers that seem to be reoccuring mainly in languages of indo-european origin, and how thusly my broader usage of the term is on the whole much more valid than your narrow dictionary.com definition might initially allow. Also, I might stress that the combinatorial terms in question "fucktard" and the like, are indeed inherently onomatopoeic since 'fuck', 'crap' and most other four letter cuss words are as related to their sounds as the anglosaxons that remodelled-coined them where unimaginative in going about it.

As to jargon. The '!=' you used is in fact, a symbol native to both number theory (and algebra and whatever mathematical field to which I am not accustomed in the least) and philosophy, and seeing as your usage was not mathematical, it very well qualified as misplaced philosophical jargon.

You might wonder why I'd choose to drag this scemantic debate out. It's mainly because I think you're a fag and you need to shut up very desperately.

jimbutsu
Feb 10th, 2005, 11:57 AM
"my broader usage of the term is on the whole much more valid than your narrow dictionary.com definition might initially allow."

So your willing something into existence validates it? Blow it out your ass.

"As to jargon. The '!=' you used is in fact, a symbol native to both number theory (and algebra and whatever mathematical field to which I am not accustomed in the least) and philosophy, and seeing as your usage was not mathematical, it very well qualified as misplaced philosophical jargon."

It was a reference to code and you know it. Trying to make something more than that out of it is kind of pathetic, and I'm thinking that you're incapable of having a well-formed argument. I was raised in a Greek Orthodox household, so I'm well accustomed to that particular inability.

I think you're clutching at straws and trying to use obfuscation to further your point. I understand where you're going with it, and there's a kernel of validity, but not enough to build an argument around. Also, you must know that the behavior you're demonstrating would have the exact opposite effect you claim to want (shutting me up).

Actually, that's not true. I don't have time for this. I have shit to do before Magnum starts.

Thank you, drive through.

Incoherent reply, conviniently avoiding my argument.

I think you're clutching at straws and trying to use obfuscation to further your point. I understand where you're going with it, and there's a kernel of validity, but not enough to build an argument around.

I'm not clutching at straws as much as you'd like to think. I have two very sturdy foundations, based on which I can bend this any way I like. First, linguistics is really the sophist's playfield. Second, you're a fag.

As a second example, the term 'emphirical' which you used, is directly associated with philosophy, as in means of supplying evidence. Is that in code too? Your secret fag code? [/code]

Also, you must know that the behavior you're demonstrating would have the exact opposite effect you claim to want (shutting me up).

Maybe I don't want you to shut up at all. Maybe I don't think you're really a fag, either. Maybe this is behaviour I'm demonstrating is what we do to pass the time around here.

Plus also, I was not raised in an Orthodox household, so I have no idea what you're talking about. Fag.

I can't find any other definition for onomatopoeia in any online or print source than "words for sounds." This isn't necessarily true on other languages that use those roots, mind you, but just because you say it doesn't make it true.

Such devices bring out the full flavor of words. Comparison and association are sometimes strengthened by syllables which imitate or reproduce the sounds they describe. When this occurs, it is called onomatopoeia (a Greek word meaning name-making "), for the sounds literally make the meaning in such words as "buzz," "crash," "whirr," "clang" "hiss," "purr," "squeak," "mumble," "hush," "boom." Poe lets us hear the different kinds of sounds made by different types of bells in his famous poem "The Bells." His choice of the right word gives us the right sound when he speaks of "tinkling" sleigh bells; "clanging" fire bells; mellow "chiming" wedding bells; "tolling," "moaning," and "groaning" funeral bells.

You're going to argue with someone over root word based in his native language? :shakeshead

It is one hot mess. I can tell you that much.

jimbutsu
Feb 10th, 2005, 06:58 PM
You're going to argue with someone over root word based in his native language? :shakeshead

Sort of. The meaning of the word in the native context is irrelevant. I know full well what the roots of the word mean, but that doesn't necessarily equate to what the word itself means in modern English. Hell, "cynical" comes from the old Greek word for "Dog," but if someone told me that it could be used to refer to dogs in the abstract just because this is so, they'd be full of crap.

Still, Helm is dead right in his point that the beauty (?) of language/linguistics is that it can be debated endlessly with no one ever really being proved or disproved right or wrong ("the sophist's playfield," which I thought was a brilliant expression). The only time anyone's ever truly "right" in language is if you're in school and someone's grading you, and even then it's just playing along.

Personally, I'd have been more apt to use the word "neologism" where Helm went for "onomatopoeia," but opinions are like Jixbys.

So, wait, you've been here long enough to have a cynical bastard shirt and know about my site, but you still haven't caught on that I go out of my way to look feminine?

Are you sure you passed your initiation?

When was the last time someone worthwhile signed up here? Seriously, I'm pretty sure it's been more than a couple of months with nothing but cunts and retards.

I hope Varg stabs you in the head the next time you idiots let him out for a weekend vacation.

Loved your article on Halloween, by the way.

hahah varg is norwegian and they do let him out of prison don't they!

Wait though, I don't get it. You know about his website and the stuff on it and how it makes sense and interelates to here and you've not idea about his on-board persona at all? I mean, your retort was adequately dismissive, but don't be a fag.

Opeth are ok for one album. I didn't expect you to care for this sort of music, I asked for a joke since you're norwegian and you must be sick about hearing foreigners go 'OMG FROM THE LAND OF DARKTHRONE!!!1'

Yeah, it happens, but not to the point where it's really annoying. The fact that the country is relatively small is more of a problem, since everyone who has ever known everyone from Norway practically assume you'll know everyone.

Oh, that's an easy one. I've never really looked at the boards in any detail until very recently, but I've been a regular visitor to the main site for several years. And actually, I have no idea how his site makes sense and interrelates to here-- I just saw the pictures and wondered what that Peter Pan guy was doing on it, and why he had dyed his hair red.

Ha ha! All feminine guys do look like that overused internet fag joke, don't they? Just like how all straight guys bear an uncanny resemblance to Jimmy Kimmel! And all people named Jim stick their collective vaginas in a bucket of ice water at a young age to sterilize themselves from humor!

Name's not Jim.

You really did make me think of that Peter Pan dude very first thing, like it or not.

Chojin is a Japanese word and you know it.

You're not half as clever as you think you are, and even if it's not me, just remember that there's ALWAYS someone cooler than you.

Fuck, in your case, it might actually BE Peter Pan.

The easiest way is to use a web form to generate random integers (with duplicates, like dice rolls), randomized sequences (without duplicates, like lottery tickets) or raw random bytes. You can also flip virtual coins and generate random bitmaps.
