So who's seen it yet? Not really a bad movie. Tom plays a normal guy in this, he doesn't really do much action hero type stuff. It's also pretty damn dark, people get fed into alien threashers and spit out like bloody mulch. It's not really graphic, but still a damn cool idea. Gay, gay ending, though. And most of the dialogue sucks ass, too.

The movie follows the basic plot of the book (hero wanders about observing Martians killing stuff). They did add some elements, such as making him divorced with two kids and having him take a more active part in the action.


The Martians do die from Earth germs. This is not a spoiler, as you could pick up the damned book and find this out.

That isn't the ending. That is just what some black man tells you so you actually have some idea on why the fuck the movie just ended. The ending is an abrupt pile of shit filled with cliches out the ass with his family. The movie was decent until the end.

Yes, the book has been around for a long time, but that doesn't mean everyone's read it. Nor should it, because not everyone is going to like reading faggoty books about faggots. Not everyone is going to read every book ever. And now I don't even need to read the book, now that I know the ending.

It's a spoiler as much as telling how Dorothy off the Wicked Witch of the West at the end of The Wizard of Oz. I mean, if you didn't already know what happened to all the aliens at the end of War of the Worlds, even having not read the book or whatnot, you're missing a huge chunk of American pop culture trivia.

I refuse to watch this movie, because the local "We play what we want" radio station is using subtley disguised brainwashing to make me want to go see it (since everyone else is, and what a great idea for Independance Day weekend). Which just pushes that wannabe nonconformist button in my head. :(

I just got back from the movie and thought it was fucking great. If you wanna see a really solid action/survival movie with amazing special effects and sound, then this is your movie. Yes, the ending is a typical cheesy as hell Spielberg ending, but other than that this movie does nothing but entertain. Go in knowing that and you'll have a great time.

Desptie Tom Cruise being a pedophile and a whack, I've alway had a lot of respect for him AS AN ACTOR. I give this movie a 7, the ending almost ruined it for me. But I give it a 10 for the fun factor.

I saw this today. I liked it a lot. The special effects were amazing and I was at the edge of my seat all the way to the end.
The ending was cheesy and it was so damn sudden that it left a WTF feeling as I left the theater. I mean, there were people blowing up to pulp and suddenly its like BAM! All the aliens died and everyone lived happily ever after the end go away :(

I've seen it for the second time a couple nights ago. I really enjoy it. About that ending, though. That ending is perfect for 70, or even 20 years ago. I understand what Stevie was trying to do here, and he didn't do such a bad job re-interpreting an orignal story.

But problem with retelling the story is. Today, if WE could figure out what is on Mars, and tell if it could kill us in only a couple thousand years. The Martians could do the same thing, too. Especially if they were watching us for such a long time. That's what always bothered me about the story.

I didn't mind that they died of Earth germs. I was pissed that Robby was still alive. Everyone but him got blowed up and he was fine enough to make it all the way home with no problem. Fuck that.

Yeah, i thought most of the dialogue was horribly written. Everyone was giving commands to everyone else, but no one listened. Dakota Fanning was annoying, too, but damn near every little girl with a starring role in a movie pisses me off :-/.

I read the book in 6th grade so Iv always known the ending and it didnt surprise me at all, but i cant understand why everyone hates the ending so much.

the guy in front of me made a comment of how it was the worst ending ever, and it didnt make any sense and he wanted his money back, even though the narrator explained what happend.

It might be just me but I liked the ending the way it was. the movie was about survival not about fighting aliens.

I liked the book because it was from a first person perspective of a normal person trying to survive in a dangerous situation. the movie threw in kids, but it was the same thing. It wasnt a play by play of how the aliens invade every city, the reader only knows what the narator knows.

the "happy ending" didnt bother me that much, and I think most people disliked the ending because there wasnt a climax, but that didnt bother me either.

I dont know, i liked the movie.

Well see, I liked the ending too. I think it's completely reasonable, but you can't deny that it was abrupt. There was no real falling action, just destroying a church, force fields go down and UHP they're dead.

I hated the kid coming back because the movie basically made you forget about him. He wanted to go and fight, he tried, and you're supposed to believe that he's dead. There's a huge explosion, and you don't hear from him again. And then he finds his way all the way to Boston on his own, and gets there faster than the other two. I guess I saw it coming, but I didn't want to, and when it happened I got pissed.

yeah, the movie was 2 hours of running from huge aliens, and then out of nowhere they all die, everyone lives a happy life.

and the kid coming back was dumb. I knew it was coming too, but after the movie being about how horrible the aliens were, that scene in the beginning where cruise is running and every other person got cooked gave the movie a feeling that it was going to show the sad reality of how humans were being killed off. then at the end all the main characters live and better yet have come together because of it. it makes sense that he would have made it there first though, since tom and the girl were chilling in that guys basement for a while.

the part I didnt get was why the aliens buried those machines a million years ago or whenever they did. why wouldnt they just take over the planet while they were here the first time. were they in a hurry to take over other planets and thought to themselves "hey lets leave the stuff here, and after we make our rounds, we'll come back and THEN take over the planet. Awesome"

And if the machines were here the whole time, then that means the aliens were here before, which means they would have breathed the air before. i thought the point was that the bacteria killed them. theres no way they were here before there was bacteria, so it should have killed them all the first time they were here.
the aliens just landed from space in the book so it makes sense, but they never give us a reason for it in the movie. one of the most memorable scenes in the book, movie, and radio broadcast was the scene where the farmers go out to the crash site to try and greet the aliens and are melted.
I wonder why they changed that?

also that scene were tom kills tim robbins was wierd.
