Avid System hands down. Only if you have a dedicated system for editing.

Adobe After Effects is decent, but it more for... creative editing.

Adobe Premiere is a low end, batch, slash, and hack program.
Unless you go with Premiere Pro, then you need a dedicated system like Avid.

Premiere Pro runs fine on most new computers, and the learning curve is not as steep as on Avid. It's also more intuitive, but I hear Avid grows on you. I'll be trying to learn how to use it better over the coming months.

In the end, it comes down to what you need the program for. If you're just looking to edit out a few bits and do some basic transitions, you could probably just use that thing that's integrated in Windows. Microsoft Movie Maker or whatever it's called. If you want to do something more advanced, like color correction, layered image composition etc, you'll need more power.

And yeah, if you have a Mac, go for Final Cut Pro.

I use Vegas for video editing now, and stepped up to DVD Architect 3.0 from Adobe Encore.
