I'd have to say mine is Slayer, I love how much Slayer's fans get into the band. I rember the first one I went to (i was about 16) and was in the bathroom pissing and a Slayer chant started up. Takes devotion to shit and chant your favorite band's name at the same time.

Bad Religion, if only because they'll play between 25 and 35 songs in a hour and a half. I have this habit of throwing up afterwards due to exhaustion. God, I love them.

Fear Factory (never to be seen live again) and Rammstein. I wish I could say Tool, but I missed out on that one :(

All the bands I wanna see, I've pretty much already seen (and I've seen well over a hundred bands in my time).
The only real band I desperately want to see is Metal-lica, who are tankfully playing at Leeds this year. Rock on. And maybe Slayer too. And Manowar, for cheese factor.
Top gigs have been:
Bad Religion
Less Than Jake
Mad Caddies
NOFX
I have the worst taste in music ever :(

I'd say the Foo Fighters, every song was clear and perfect and at the beggining of the show dave and taylor had a drum off.

I would have to give Cannibal Corpse the title as the best band live. Of course Slayer comes in at a very close (cunthair) 2nd.

I went to CC but HATED the fans (at my show) they were just plain violent sons of bitches. I have NO problem with aggression and stuff at shows, but these guys were actually trying to seriously injure poeple, saw em break a guys arm on purpose, kick heads in and shit like that. Ruined the show for me. Incantation was there though and they were jsut brutal, awesome. :rock

Incantation: = great :)
Obituary used to be very good at live shows too. Never saw them myself, but a close friend says they where very good. Amazing vocals. Best in the genre, if you aks me. He used to not sing some verses to catch his breath or spit, I am told, which is a minus. :|

I saw Obituary on their Cause of Death tour. They were very good.
I also saw them on their Back from the Dead tour, but John Tardy was sick, so there was some skinhead guy singing hardcore style instead. It was extremely disappointing. :(

I've got a pretty neat video of them playing "Turned Inside Out" that was shown on Headbanger's Ball, and i thought it was pretty good. They let people get up on stage and dive off, and if you stay on too long, they'll get tossed off by pushers. :)

My first concert was Cannibal Corpse on the Tomb of the Mutilated tour. I couldn't have been more than 14 or 15. I ended up getting up in the front row against the barricade and was pinned there for the entire show. When it was done, I literally had a bald spot on the back of my head from getting huge chunks of hair ripped out. The best part was that I had to go to school the next day while all my friends just slept in. Oh, but I did get to meet Chris Barnes. He was actually really nice, not to mention short as hell.

Poison the Well is so boring live. A hardcore band that stands around. Woot. :|
I really like seeing Between The Buried and Me play because I just stand there in amazement. Killswitch Engage is one of the best sounding bands I've seen live. The best performance, however, goes to a band from Syracuse, Ed Gein. Tech metal/grindcore at its best. They broke almost all of their equipment 2 of the 3 times I saw them.

Breaking one's equipment on stage is as retarded as it gets. What, am I supposed to break my brand new half a mil Les Paul because it's 'rawk and roll?' Fuck that. Greatest bands live as the ones that communicate their emotions most efficiently. Tech/grind bands have no emotions. That's okay with me, but breaking stuff up doesn't make up for that.

White Zombie during the astro creep tour back in '95 was pretty fucking badass.
Seeing Tool live was a very emotional experience, considering that I was in an altered state of mind throughout the entire show.
Neurosis, Cannibal Corpse, Rollins Band and Integrity were all excellent as well.

Actually, this band does carry quite a bit of emotion, and they were going so off the wall that they jus kept falling back into their cabs or hitting their guitar necks on things.
Dillinger Escape Plan intentionally breaks guitars. I hate them for it, but love them so......

To address a couple of things:
Maybe I'm biased, because they are the best fucking band EVER, but my favorite live show was Mr. Bungle.
As far as TOOL and GWAR go, one thing or another ruined both of these for me.
TOOL was playing VooDooFest in New Orleans, and they looked like they were doing it just for the paycheck. Most bands get into it, Tool just stood there. Not even any videos or anything showing behind them, like Tool is famous for.
GWAR was fucking excellent, but the crowd itself ruined it for me. You see, I don't know who decided that this was brilliant booking, but they had GWAR opening for ICP?!?
The wigger kids kept booing and throwing shit, just making it a miserable experience.

Out of the concerts I've been to, GWAR would have to be the most entertaining. Getting drenched with "blood" sure beats the stone prescence of Depeche Mode. Billy Idol put on an amusing show, with the throngs of women running onstage and Billy putting their heads in his crotch...

Dimmu Borgir are only superficially black metal. If you want to understand what BM is, buy Ulver's Nattens Madrigal.
JonSwift
Apr 10th, 2003, 07:49 PM
Dimmu Borgir is about as black as cradle of filth.
ie. Not very.
JonSwift
Apr 11th, 2003, 05:53 AM
I think with Nattens Madrigal Ulver was trying to make a statement. It is ridiculus how black metal elitists (the bands) intentionally use shitty producing on their albums simply because the founders of black metal could not afford quality producing. So to protest this he took the idea of shitty production to the EXTREME. The album was recorded somwhere in the woods even.
Garm challeneged the black metal community's definition of black metal with arcturus and drove the point home with Ulver. Garm's vision, I think, is that music should not have borders. Even music within a strict genre can vary greatly from band to band so why plaster on misleading labels?

because people feel the need to organise everything to the point of stupidity and hinderance.

Most BM bands use production according to the structure of the music, from my experiences. The more sophisticated ones tend to go for cleaner production, while rawer sounding ones go for...well, raw production. Emperor's In the Nightside Eclipse was a better produced one, despite the poor mixing. Compare that with Darkthrone's Transylvanian Hunger. No, I don't think it's necessary to use bad production, but if they use it in a way that gives it a unique or effective sound, more power to 'em.
Helm
Apr 11th, 2003, 10:12 AM
LOL on the BM history class. I urged BC to check out said record, simply because it DOES encapture the essence of norw. harsh black metal than anything else I've ever heard, without being completely stupid in the process. Which says ALOT in a black metal context. The 'symolism' behind the production or 'what does the artist mean' do not interest me in the least, if they are not evident.
JonSwift
Apr 11th, 2003, 05:58 PM
how could you appreciate bad producing?
I mean when the recording is WORSE than how the band sounds live... whats the point unless the band plays like shit live?
Cap'n Crunch
Apr 11th, 2003, 10:52 PM
I think System of a Down does a good show. They do alot of songs that aren't on CD at their concerts.
JonSwift
Apr 12th, 2003, 12:57 AM
So helm the essence of norse black metal is shitty sound quality?
I believe that it is the superficial gimick that drives the elitist mentality. The music is about the music, not the other superficialites some bands use (ie. corpse paint).
Queefer Sutherland
Apr 12th, 2003, 03:26 AM
Once again, I do agree that it's all about the music, but the examples I gave are records in which the production was good/bad in order to enhance the feel of the songs, much like countless hardcore bands that want analog recording rather than digital. It's hard for me to put into words as it's mainly a feeling. If you listen to them and compare the styles and production quality, you'll see what I mean.
