What the fuck is it? I've been racking my brains for a good 30 seconds and nothing springs to mind (besides the cliche "americas are fat!" type dishes).

No! I refuse to be associated with KFC. I'm going with Willie's second suggestion, only wiht "Homemade" preceding it.

After further consideration I think turkey and apple pie must be pretty high up. Don't turkeys come from America originally?

Yeah, now that I think about it, BBQ may be the best candidate as far as uniquely American cuisine goes.

Except the Koreans and Mongolians beat us to it.

Pizza is the best candidate, considering it's a bastardization of something coming from Napoli. The American ideal is to take something Old World and pervert it in some awkward way, and pizza embodies this. Apple pie comes from England, so that works too.

I think the best truly indigenous dishes are all local. In Indiana we have breaded pork tenderloin sandwiches, which are sex. Michigan has pasties, which are okay. Ummm, Cajun food is good. Boston clam chowder, Florida conch fritters, you get the picture.

yea pizza was originally like the american equivalent of pudding bread (using old rotten food to make something tasty) or whatever and america turned it into the delicous thing it is today

Corn and (i think) turkeys are indigenous to america. Corn is totally the staple american food.

I would say BBQ'd food is Australia's national dish, not America's.

Clam chowder, like Sethomas mentioned.

And, yes, it's true: fortune cookies ARE an American invention, not Chinese.
