There's something in the human psyche that finds the concept of fighting off the legions of Hell with shotguns and chainsaws immensely appealing. This partially explains the popularity of DOOM, the mother of all first-person 3D shooters, or at least the first to really *seem* 3D. To a modern gamer, the low resolution is painfully apparent, but other than that, it's held up remarkably well; solid gameplay, engaging levels, and the gratification of hearing the imps howl as your chaingun rips them in half. It's an interesting sidenote that it actually has a consistent plot (even if you have to read the documentation for most of it), and the premise was stolen for use in the movie Event Horizon. In short, it's a lot of fun, and a piece of gaming history.

Oh yeah- don't play the N64 version. It's not the same game, nor at all enjoyable.

Available for free download at www.download.com
