I am sick and tired of games where the only reason you fight the baddies is to preserve truth, justice and the American way of life. Quite frankly I couldn't care less if some evil guy is amassing weapons and artillery (so this is not a reference to Saddam Hussein, its the plot of the game)
This is the reason I liked Raptor: COTS so much. It like any other vertical scrolling plane game (like Raiden etc) except the only reason you have to fight is that you are getting paid a shitload of money!

And what exactly do you do with this money?

You spend it on huge freaking weapons that are added on to your plane so you can earn even more money!

I mean...what plane doesn't need a giant electromagnetic pulse generator with auto targeting machine guns, plasma cannon and micromissiles?

However, this awesome firepower can make the game just a little lame and easy. The weapons should not weigh more than the plane itself in my opinion. Being able to fire about 300,000 missiles in the space of five minutes is nice, but does make the game a lot less realistic. I prefer my games to have some realism in them.
The intelligence required to play these games drops sharply once you earn enough to buy the larger, more powerful weapons. The heat seeking machine gun means all you have to do is put something heavy on the mouse and walk away for ten minutes, confident that when you return you will have safely reached the end of the level and probably beaten the ridiculously easy boss. The boss planes usually fire forward, meaning that you can simply move behind them and let the heat seeker do its job. Its kind of like running behind a fat person and punching them; it’s not challenging and ultimately not fun.
The other enemy planes are just as easy and annoying. They fly at you from the top of the screen and disappear once they have reached the bottom, if you haven't already destroyed them. With all the amazing technology that your enemies seem to have, you would think that they could perhaps turn around and begin chasing you.
The music in this game is about average. Its nothing spectacular but then again it wont make your ears bleed either.
The genre is nothing new, but the money element of Raptor COTS adds a new dimension to an otherwise limited game.
