In A.D. 2004, review was beginning.

The Genesis is a great system to own if you wanna get some standout games, such as Herzog Zwei, Fatal Rewind, or Toejam and Earl. There was something for everyone, but the shooter genre seemed kind of sparse. Truxton got the vertical shooter idea down good, but there was a better shooter out there. Enter Zero Wing, a first party horizontal shooter that came out early in the Genesis' life. Everything about the game screams basicness - except for the infamous and flashy (for its time) intro - but the gameplay is just done so well.

So yea, we get signal, main screen turn on, all your base...blah blah blah, so how's the game? I never even knew what type of game Zero Wing was until I got in on E-Bay a few weeks ago. It's a straight-up shooter, complete with psuedo ship, powerup-carrying enemies, and loads of baddies to fill the screen.

There's lots and lots of levels to fly around in and shoot, and the music is mildly entertaining (meaning it won't drive you crazy). The powerup system is tolerable, offering you 3 different ways to attack. There's your mandatory straight shooter, the ever-present LAZOR, and your kickass homing bullets. Each time you get a weapon upgrade, the power (or should I just say range?) of your weapon increases, but only if you get the same weapon each time. Very easy and effective. And the game isn't that hard either. It's perfect for killing a few hours on.

So give Zero Wing a try, and just not for the intro, which I still watch each time.
