View Full Version : Punk Bands
Feb 4th, 2003, 03:42 PM
I've been out of it for a little while. Anyone got any decent punk bands to recommend me? Don't bother with any of the real big names, chances are i've already heard of 'em. The only stipulation is no "oi!" or anarchy shit. :(
Feb 4th, 2003, 05:45 PM
You're looking for new 'punk'? what do you like already?
Feb 4th, 2003, 05:56 PM
punk, punkish, something decidedly not metal. Already on the list: Groovie Ghoulies, AFI, Pennywise, dwarves, Zeke, Dropkick Murphys, Thought Riot (thanks Blackflag), Electric Frankenstein, Guttermouth, Gimme Gimmes, Rancid, New Bomb Turks, Beatsteaks, Bouncing Souls, Black Flag, Ramones, etc. Basically mainstream kinda stuff. :/ Gimme something new to listen to.
Feb 4th, 2003, 06:05 PM
The only punk band I can think of is Anti-Flag right now :/ They're pretty good though
Feb 4th, 2003, 08:03 PM
Nah, i don't care for anti-flag. Can't stand his voice. If anyone mentions the Misfits, Blanks 77, or the Casualties, i'm gonna fucking strangle them. >:
Feb 4th, 2003, 08:35 PM
hey, i know! the misfits! :P
Feb 4th, 2003, 08:36 PM
I'd love to help, but you're Helm's asphyxiation-wench. :(
Feb 4th, 2003, 08:43 PM
dropkick murphys. nothing like drunken irish bagpipe playin' punk rock. one of my first concerts, i was crowd surfing and got kicked in the face and bled over the shirt i just bought :) good times.
Feb 4th, 2003, 08:48 PM
you're Helm's asphyxiation-wench
a girl can dream, anyway. :(
Feb 4th, 2003, 08:55 PM
Death By Stereo
Feb 4th, 2003, 08:59 PM
Hate strike anywhere, and i already got DBS and 1208, but i'll scope the other two.
Feb 4th, 2003, 09:19 PM
Nofx and the vadals are tried and true. at the drive in can be considered punk, im an fan of old offspring, dead kennedys, misfits, dead milkmen, some no use for a name, voodoo glow skulls, pennywise, . you might like sleater-kinney or taking back sunday too. they're pretty leany towards emo. and by that i mean they are. http://www.trashsurfin.de/ is a good place to look for what suits you...
Feb 4th, 2003, 09:22 PM
I've already got what i'm interested in on that list, but thanks for the link.
Feb 4th, 2003, 11:06 PM
Get you some Downset. That be some ill shit.
Feb 5th, 2003, 02:25 PM
Propagandhi. Honestly, you can't go wrong with any of their albums. Maybe even mid-90's Total Chaos. Their first two albums on Epitaph were fucking punk as all hell. SNFU. Guns 'n Wankers. Eh, what the fuck do I know? I'm an Epitaph/Fat Wreck Chords loser.
Feb 5th, 2003, 02:33 PM
Some of my favorite bands are Quincy Punx, Blanks 77, Dayglo Abortions, Black Fork, The Criminals, The Casualties, The Exploited, DRI, Blatz, Filth, Crimpshrine, Riot/Clone, The Partisans and so on.
Feb 5th, 2003, 07:39 PM
I'll scope a few of those, also, though i'm not much a fan of anything much older than Black Flag. :/
Feb 5th, 2003, 09:51 PM
Ha ha what an ungrateful ass! No thanks, no hey I'll check that out. You ask for suggestions and people oblige, and all you can do is tell them why their choices suck? Ha ha right on.
Feb 5th, 2003, 10:04 PM
Well, yeah, i'm looking for things i haven't heard of.
Feb 9th, 2003, 10:47 PM
Pennywise are very much metal.
All I can suggest is The Subhumans (UK). Really like them.
Sadie: airport ticket and dream materializes into painfull, certain reality.
Feb 9th, 2003, 11:28 PM
fuck! i'll have to start saving my pennies, then. :love :lol
Feb 18th, 2003, 02:44 PM
Nomeansno. Start with Wrong or 0+2=1.
Alice Donut. Mule or Donut Comes Alive.
Rites of Spring. (Guy's of Fugazi earlier band)
Oh that's right, you've already heard of all these.
Here's a link to a bunch of local punk bands in my area. Maybe something there will be new to you. :/

What about all the pre-90s punk bands? Many of them are so far unmentioned on this thread.
Jerry's Kids-Is this My World?
Agent Orange-Living In Darkness
Minor Threat(of course)
Oh, fuck it. I could go on all day...that's a good list to start with. THAT'S some real punk for ya.
Rites of Spring were GREAT. First Emo band, before "Emo" became something totally different and inferior.
Apr 6th, 2003, 03:39 PM
Rites of Spring were not the first emo band.
Apr 6th, 2003, 09:08 PM
That's probably true, on a musical level. Who would you say was the first, or at least who predated them?
The thing about Emo is that it seemed to start out as a certain subgenre from HC on a musical level, but quickly just became a scene since not every punk band that was "emotional" was called emo. I think the ROS may have been the first to be CALLED emo, but of course that has little to do with the music. It's hard to say who were the first punk band to focus on the emotions expressed by ROS.
what's the earliest Emo you can think of?

Apr 7th, 2003, 05:20 AM
Haha! That reply is funny because of the strange truth it has to it. On the other hand, it's hard for me to say whether he was punk or powerpop, and from what I know, Emo is the sadder end of hardcore specifically. Either way that's a damn good answer, and I wish it had at least crossed my mind(not to mention the fact that Elvis' voice has similarities to Guy's!.)
Apr 10th, 2003, 11:05 AM
elvis is brilliant.
Apr 18th, 2003, 05:57 AM
I know this is a semi old topic, but Ive noticed that nobody has mentioned Samhain, even tho they arent totally punk, but more of a metal/punk hybrid...
Apr 18th, 2003, 10:48 AM
Apr 18th, 2003, 03:38 PM
dont hurt me.
Apr 18th, 2003, 07:25 PM
I just looked up the nifty brand of hardcore vocals and grind drumstyle of Yellow Machinegun. Sorry if they were already mentioned here, but i think this is band is pretty fuckin' nifty.
Apr 21st, 2003, 11:11 AM
i don't remember all the bands that were listed out for you before this post, so i'm just going to tell you what i listened to when i was listening to punk a lot.
fearless iranians from hell
dana 60 and the pistolgrips (local)
you should check out the blasters too. BECAUSE I SAID SO.
Apr 21st, 2003, 11:39 AM
I did look up The Blasters a little while ago, and i even told Rongi about them. Good stuff. :)
Also looked up the Angry Samoans, and i like them a lot too. "Inside My Brain" is quite the nifty little ditty.
Already have some Black Flag, but i'll scope all the other stuff you've got there.
Apr 21st, 2003, 11:43 AM
if you liked the blasters, you'll like x and x is my favorite ever so i rule.
