On my way to work this morning, I picked up the latest issue of Direct Art Magazine, most impressive glossy periodical, and inside saw a full pge ad for the work of none other than our own Marie Barr, A.K.A Doopa. It features all her info and a reproduction of 'Heart', which I think came out quite well.

It looks excellent and holds it's own with all the houghty toighty gallery driven ads, and it's in damn fine company as far as the artists faetured in stories.

I'm sure this belongs in the art section, but I think this is way to impressive not to go on our front page.

If you've never been to her site, you should go right now. It's http://www.strangepuppets.com

I purchased a poster and the artist was kind enough to sign it. [/url]

Me and Doopa have the same first two letters and last letter in our last names! That's radical.

Noob, I like you, But I am TRYING to give some PROPS to DOOPA becuase of her MAD SKILZ and because of her SOLID STONES for taking out a FULL PAGE AD in such a CLASSY PUBLICATION!

I bought it at the Red Lion in Salem and a made the counter guy look at the ad.

Actually, she didn't take out an Ad for that Max. She won a contest and got to put any piece of her choice on a full page along with all of her contact information! :) I'm real proud of her. I didn't know it was already out though! She was told it wouldn't be out until June! :o

She's not even in town right now, she's up in D.C.... I'll have to go call her right away. Thanks for posting that Max, you've always been really supportive of her artwork.

Yeah, she prolly told me about that there contest deally, but I'm OLD and so I FORGET EVERYTHING.

That's way better than paying for an ad.

Congrats to you, La Doopster, and it looks Great. May it bring you hits and buisiness. DIRECT is more classier than Juxtapose, but you should hit them up now that you got you some ART CRED!

ok they finally sent me a copy of the magazine (I still haven't found any here, but I haven't really tried looking for about a week).
The print came out better than I was expecting it to. And I really like that they put black behind it. So yeah I am pretty happy about it.
I've never seen that mag before, it was very interesting the stuff they have in it... different from the big normals.

Wow Re, m suprised nobody started a thread like this before! You should have t-shirts of your art as well. I'd buy one.
Some of your work reminds me of Hieronymus Bosch...are you familiar with him?

Eventually I do want other stuff on there to buy, but right now I have to save my moneys for some bigger things.

Now that's some scary shiyat. I never want to go to hell after seeing some of his stuff ... not even to visit friends. That guy must have had one tortured soul. What's with the owls in his work? Is that some sort of symbology I'm not getting?

Actually, very little is known about Bosch. We barely have enough information on the guy to fill out a passport. Quite frustrating really.

I do recall reading somewhere that some things in his paintings may have been literal interpretations of Dutch proverbs and idioms. Kind of like showing that someone is a asshole (as in a jerk) by painting them as a big sphinchter with legs.

We do know that he did get married, and that he was inducted into some kind of guild of church artists, so he couldn't have been totally insane.

Pretty much everything you look at in a Bosch painting has a hidden meaning or symbolizes something. Animals and objects often portray sins and seductions.

But is his first name Hieronymus, or Jeroen? I can imagine the former being a 'foreign' version of his name much like 'Christopher' Columbus, but I can also imagine the latter being a Dutch bastardization or shorter version of his real name.

Jeanette X

Hieronymus is a Latin form of the Greek name Hieronymos, which means "Sacred Name". The name Hieronymus was/is used in Germany and Holland. The name Jerome is the English version of the name.

I think I will start a name meanings thread. :)
