I frequently switch the recording volume settings on my laptop (Windows 98) around because I record a lot on mic, and directly from the laptop's sound channel. However, for some reason, the loudspeaker icon on the taskbar appears only half the times I start up Windows. Even when I then look up the volume settings program in my start menu, clicking its icon simply has no effect. Nothing loads, nothing happens. Anyone know why this is?

Also, the default recording volume for the laptop's output channel seems to always be LOUD. And everytime Windows is loaded, the recording volume sets the current setting of the volume settings bar as default (LOUD). Which means that everytime I start up my computer and want to record straight from the output channel, I first have to go into volume settings and turn the recording volume down two notches. Is there a way to prevent Windows from setting the loud default on ouput channel recording everytime Windows is started up?

"Yeah, you're gonna have to reformat your hard drive and then reboot. Problem solved."
