Nature Question For Jeanette (Or, "Tarantulas")

My lady picked up a tarantula today and is storing it here. I wanted to know a few things...

- Someone told her that if you drop it from 4 inches or above, its exoskeleton will shatter. I told her that's impossible because I've seen 'Home Alone' and know better, but I need you to put her mind at ease.

- How can you determine its gender? Can male tarantulas spin web things? It had some web dragging from it and has two black bits on its end.

- How can we tell if it has venom sax? :o

- (for everyone) GIVE IT A NAME :<

*- Is it safe to keep its cage on top of a microwave? I'm not using the 'wave until I find out, anyway... :<

I think it would probably be okay to put the cage on top of the microwave.

All tarantulas possess venom. In general (although some species have been reported to have more potent venom) a tarantula bite can be compared with a bee sting in severity. Tarantulas are considered harmless, and bites are extremely rare. Some people have reportedly experienced reactions to a tarantula bite, including severe localized pain or breathing irregularity. If this happens, GO TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM!

I'd be more worried about it using it's hairs to defend itself than I would about being bitten, to be honest with you.

It is possible for the abdomen to rupture if the tarantula is dropped from a height. Ground-dwelling species are more vunerable to this than abroeal species, but in general, dropping from a height is a bad idea.

I'll see what I kind find about sexing tarantulas. Telling me what species of tarantula is will help immensely. And yes, many species of male tarantulas can spin silk, although most species use this silk to line burrows rather than make webs.

i work there, actually.i'll ask scott if he knows what species/sex it is, but i doubt the breeders he got it from even know the sex after only a few months. i'm posting the pic on one of those "ask the expert" sites..

i've always loved arachnids. i don't think i've ever been afraid of one. i kept a few that i caught in my house as pets before, too. they were wolf spiders, but they're better let go by october, so they would survive the winter... i was sad.. :(
