Second off, anywhere you go, people are wary when a new face shows up. School, work, sports teams, circle jerks, etc. Communities and friedships are developed, and people don't like new folks coming in and changing things.

In an internet sense though, it's really more along the lines of assuming/being proved to that the new person is, in fact, a huge fucking idiot. It's not that we hate newbies, we just hate huge fucking idiots.

And yes, quite often there is a little bit of newbie "hazing" of sorts... but you don't exactly have to have an incredibly thick skin to withstand it.
