All of a sudden, my monitor's display fucked up, out of the blue. It's become significantly dimmer, with some colors seemingly blurred and other looking out of whack, for lack of a better turn. Like, something orange looks REALLY orange, while everything else is still dim.

There's also horizontal grey lines going across the screen. They line up tih the side of boxes, images, text, toolbars, etc.

Someone please help.

Any magnetic fields around it? Speakers?

No, nothing. There's nothing different done recently to my computer or the area around my computer. I looked away toward my TV for literally one second, and looked back to see this.

sounds like your monitor is dead. i dont know about the colors but the horizontal lines usually start when the monitor is about to go out.

My friend got the vertical lines on his monitor but he ended up having to get a new one. How long have you had it?

My screen has had those lines for about 2 fucking years now.

It might be your video card. Similar thing happened when one of my vid cards died. Try that before a monitor they are alot cheaper to replace.

It's not an LCD screen, is it? On my laptop I've had those horizontal lines sometimes, and it often gets dimmer because the way the screen folds up is badly designed (it shakes up the connections, or whatever). Most of the time when it fucks up, it's because it's accidentally been in the sun for a while.

It's a flatscreen (not flat panel) monitor that I've had for about 3 years or so. It MAY still be under warranty, so I'll have to look into that.

I got a couple responses from Dell, but I'm not sure if it relates to my problem or not. But I'm gonna try them and hope for the best.

Every monitor has the "degausing" capability. Certain waves can cause your monitor to bounce, shift or warp colors.

Check the connector, too. My monitor used to turn everything a shade of blue when it was bumped because a few pins were loose.

Just an update on my situation (not that you care). I tried all sorts of things suggested by Dell's online support. I'm down to three things. But all signs point to one option: "Troubleshoot the video adapter."

I'm really dreading going in and handling my hardware (SHUT UP!). But hopefully, that'll fix it. If not, I need a new video card.

I should just have my own LiveJournal.

I'm just leaving mine alone until I get a new computer. I tried to fix a Gameboy once, but it caught on fire when I turned it on, so I am not going to even try to fix this.
