"Niggardly" (noun: "niggard") is an adjective meaning "stingy" or "miserly", related to the Norwegian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norwegian_language) verb nigle. It is cognate with "niggling", meaning "petty" or "unimportant", as in "the niggling details"

"That man is acting niggardly"

Back in 2005, I wrote a college paper where the ONLY word appropriate was "niggardly". I had a long debate with my roomie over whether or not it should be put in the paper or whether it'd be misconstrued, and I decided I'd do it. I turned in the paper and got locked in the looney bin for a month, never seeing that professor (who was a total babe with the hots for me) again. I never found out what grade I got for that paper, but the professor emailed me all like, "I'm sorry you missed class for a month, do you want to talk about dropping?" and I ignored it because I was kicked out of school and that was in the realm of other people's problems.

Also, I find it humorous that my computer's spell check recognizes hooker as a word.
