View Full Version : Thank God For Goodwill...

LOVE IT!!! I've found some of best crap I ever bought at Goodwill stores, most recently I got a Nickelodeon "Super Slimer" for $4.99, a book on early digital artwork and some crazy new-age Christian book called "After The Rapture" from the late 70's. :rock

I always force my folks to go the local Goodwill store wherever we go for vacation, I got a unopened McHammer CD and a couple of Genesis games up near Cedar Point.

I got my guitar and paisley wardrobe from Goodwill and the Salvation Army.

I donated a shitload of books to goodwill, after putting stickers in them asking people to email me and let me know how far they'd gone.

So far I've gotten one from Australia (guy sold a book on snakes on Ebay, an Australian bought it) and one from here in town.

Maybe you'll find one someday.

I found some old 8mm kids educational films from around the 60's there. I never got to run them but I should try to find them and see what potential they have.

Don't have a Goodwill in my town, but a local Thrift Store had the entire Goosebumps series.

Another tip is to always check old books, especially Bibles and things that look like they might have been around for a while. At a used bookstore (it was an old library selling off stock), I found an 1837 biography of Elizabeth I. When I opened it, a little envelope fell out...inside was a Roman coin. I don't know what the coin had to do with Elizabeth I, but it was a cool find.

Another time, the fiance bought me a giant antique Catholic catechism book as a gift. The outside was cool enough (hand-tooled leather), but inside there was a treasure trove of stuff...old pressed flowers that were obviously from someone's wedding or baptism, holy cards, certificates of this and that from the early 1900s, photographs, and all sorts of cool stuff.

In an old coat I bought from the Salvation Army I once found a letter in German. It was written in fountain pen ink and I never got around to translating it.

A friend of mine bought a recliner from the Salvation Army. When he brought it home and reclined it, a PSP fell out. Working, with a memory card and a copy of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" in the UMD drive.

He immediately traded it for a DS and some games.

Our Salvation Army stores are mostly sleazy and dirty. Especially the one here in town, it was so small and narrow you had to walk down the aisles single file. And you just knew the clothes hadn't been cleaned.

I went to one in Ithaca when I was in school, because I wanted a cheap Ithaca mug for my pens. Walked in there and the roof was leaking right onto the tables and the dirt floor.

Sometimes they vary according to area. Near Madison WI, the St. Vincent dePaul thrift store is clean. It smells like laundry detergent and you can hear the washer/dryer going to clean the donated clothes. I can fill a shopping cart with books there for like $20.

But here in Dayton, the St. Vincent dePaul is a big smelly gymnasium. The homeless sleep in the store at night, which is noble enough, I guess. But it doesn't do great things for the merchandise :(

george
Nov 12th, 2009, 06:41 PM
when i was a kid they ran a st. vincent depaul out of a small house. i never went in it, but was friends with some kids whose parents pretty much bought everything there. i never realized it was a chain though, i just thought it was one of those local charaties.

the salvation army and goodwill near my home are pretty nice, and i once had to do community service at a Mellwood (they are a charity for dignity and such for retards) Thrift store. i hated it. i had a 17 year old girl in charge of me and all she had me do was sorth through donations while she evaluated the clothes to see what she wanted for herself.

Kitsa
Nov 12th, 2009, 07:56 PM
We have a giant goodwill here but it's always really picked over, especially the books. You get people who just stand in front of the shelf and won't move for anyone, and it's really irritating.

That and the books are right next to the toys, so you get lots of moms dumping their kids off there to entertain themselves while they go through clothes. I hate that.

kahljorn
Nov 12th, 2009, 08:15 PM
I've never really found any nice clothes at good will, although i still have this retardedly slutty miniskirt from there :( I did find a copy of herman hesse's siddharta there (which was great cause I went there to look for it with my psychic intuition :O) and kurt voneguhts slaughterhouse five for 80 cents. One time they had a huge horror dvd collection and a bunch of ed wood stuff though. Mostly i go to good will for like plates and pans and stuff.
One time i found a cool shirt for my girlfriend at good will though :O
