Anyone read any good ones? Personally I'd like to learn about what plants are eatable, what wood (if burned) will kill me, and perhaps some herbs for basic illnesses.

Another one I want to find is one based on world apocalypse survival (not a zombie survival guide :rolleyes). Which reminds me, I have to put together an earthquake kit for my gf's house.

This looks hopeful.

helpful hint the only kind of wood that will kill you when burned is the kind that has "t.n.t." written on the side

never take wood from an anthropomorphic rabbit, guys

Some Hawaiian told me that every year white people die on the beach from burning wood from a ****** tree. I forget what tree it is though.

also apparently the leaves of the yew tree are hell of toxic so if those got burnt along with the wood the smoke might be pretty nasty

I've heard eucalyptus is poisonous to burn, but I see it in lots of wood bundles so I don't really believe it, probably the leaves or something.

executioneer

i don't think it's poisonous but the oil will fuck your shit up and i'm pretty sure that's a leaf thing yeah

dunno how the fuck koala bears can stand it

That would explain how something so cute is so goddam dangerous.

There is a urban survival show on history channel tonight. I hope it's useful.

I've read a few books over the years about survival, and I am pretty confident that I could last several hours by myself in the bush.

Tadao

any of those books stand out as note worthy?

Well, from memory, the best one was a British SAS guide. Had lists of poisonous plants etc, detailed guides of how to build shelter.

I guess there are probably quite a few on the market, but British SAS worked for me.

Does anyone watch Man versus Wild, or Born Survivor with Bear Grylls? Not really a book, but...

http://thevitaminm.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/3552_large.jpg

I like to laugh at how EXTREME he makes everything out to be; every snake is the most venomous, every temperature is either scorching or freezing, and every plant has a story that he heard where it killed 26 tourists who ate it.

He is ex-SAS, and he does pretty well for himself.

I can't stand Bear for just that reason. I hate overly excited people who shout a lot.

Zhukov

He is a bit of a joke, really. I like to scoff at how little water he apparently survives on.

Sucking on the dew from a rock before going on about how the body needs 15 liters of water a day in situations such as these.

In the staes we prefer Les Stroud. He hasn't been caught faking survival for the camera.

We don't have any survival TV shows based here because it is literally impossible to survive in Australia.

you dont need to be eating a dead hyena or drink your own whiz, just bring some supplies with you. like some canned goods, rations, and water. having a stash always helps

7 pounds of food can last you a week.. water is heavier. around 4 pounds a gallon. and you go through half a gallon a day, if youre conservative. but at leasts itll be a couple of days before you think of drinking your own whiz ^.^;

in a week, you can at least cover 200 miles. thats a big radius. you're bound to find some sort of civilization

:lol

The Great Victoria desert is about 170 000 miles squared. People don't survive, they just die and are never heard of again. Even someone like Bear or some other expert survivalist would die before a week. People try to cross the Nullabor plains in vehicles, and they die. These aren't even the biggest deserts in the world!

yeah but bear Grylls had some stints in Iceland, Ireland, Dominica. Which arent exactly large places. Well you know what i mean. A little backpack full of goodies would do ok there ^.^

Sure, always better off with supplies. I'd feel safer with an EPIRB though.

I suppose both out points are the same; better to be prepared, and to avoid getting into a survival situation.
