if you want to be technical about it. 28 days later based it's begining on the book "The Day of the Triffids"...so it's a case of borrowing a borrowed idea.

Kirkman is actually from Kentucky. He's a friend of a friend. From what I understand, he wrote the series thinking about this area, which is already having a pretty shitty winter this year. I guess he just moved the setting to Atlanta because it's more familiar to most people than Lexington.
