But, since you never told her that you wanted to be with her (even though acting like a "brother" is a clear sign that you do) she may just think that something like this would make you feel good. She may be thinking that saying that is like saying "There are women that will want to be with you, you know, but just not me."
Sounds like she just wanted to give you some self esteem without sounding like an invitation.

Actually to me she sounds like she doesn't really know what love is about. In all seriousness, James, whoever said that she dosent know waht love is was right. I had the same problem with my girlfriend (well, now ex-girlfriend, but lets ignore that part for now) at first. She really liked me as a friend and didnt want to lose that, but that was because she had that superficial boyfriend/girlfriend/fucking partner idea which is wrong. Just have a serious conversation with her about that, and explain that really the best relashionships are the ones that start off as friendships. If she is looking for someone she could spend the rest of her life with (like dating is intended to be) then what better person then someone she gets along with wonderfully from the start, not someone who she has to learn to love?
