How do I do this? I would like to take songs from my analog 4 track and some how send them to a friend who could add a track and send back.

4 track -> computer

4 track -> DAT

4 track -> CD-R

Any of these will give you a digital recording. You'll probably need a computer no matter what in order to send it, either as a .wav or an .mp3. Then your friend does his recording, uses some spiffy audio editing program (I use Sound Forge) to overdub it, and sends the modified file back to you.

Your tracks will be irretrievably mixed together in the conversion though, unless you save them all as separate files.

Thanks Perdog. I have some software from Cakewalk called music creator but like the demo of sound forge my puter doesn't seem powerful enough to handle the files. I think what someone told me is that I need to compress them?

To compress it would be to convert it to mp3 or some other compressed file type.
