Need codec

I'm trying to watch an avi file, but all I get visually is a lot of colors at the top of the video window and a lot of gray. So I'm supposing I need a codec. Windows Media Player insists it's up to date, and I don't want to install the codecs I get from Divx.com because they come with Gator. All codecs found on Kazaa and through similar sources are bogus and spyware.

Any ideas? :/

try a codec pack like nimo or something...a quick google search should turn up something on that

Easy enough to eliminate Gator afterwards. :(

But DivX is really gay now for having it. >:
