This is really starting to piss me off >:
I am so tired and I have a lovely crushing pain in my chest that won't go away
There are some really stupid suggestions online on some insomnia sites and I don't see how they could help. And then there is this:
Insomnia can have serious repercussions, including:
Playing a role in industrial disasters such as Exxon Valdez and the Three Mile Island nuclear plant accident
nice.

Insomnia blows ass. I pretty much can't counter it unless I've got nyquil so I just go along with it and end up sleeping all day :(

Ny-Quil never worked for me. It seemed like it made my BODY tired, but not my MIND, and it's still extremely hard to sleep when you can't stop thinking.
And some people believe it makes you feel like you're 'high' if you try to stay awake when Ny-Quil gets you tired. Ahh, the wonders of the middle schooler mind never cease to amaze me.

well, Insomnia can be cured with reverse psychology. try staying up, and you'll get really tired, and fall asleep. *cough*making this all up, so just try it, and if it doesn't work, you can just fly over and shoot me*cough*
or, you should get someone to inject you with cyanide. you'll sleep for sure, only, there is a nasty side-effect called death, so, you might not want to take this advice.

Strychnine and visits to the parent's house have the same effect.

I've been having horrible insomnia recently. I always have trouble falling sleep, but recently it's been really bad. I can not, no matter how hard I try, get more than six hours of sleep in a day/night, and lately it's been coming in two hour bursts
Nyquil helps, but only if I take a lot of it, and I still can only sleep for six hours. And then I'm even more tired when I wake up.

Perhaps that's why they show nothing but infomercials late at night, to try to help people sleep.
This, of course, does not faze anyone that has a VCR, lol.
I usually have insomnia though because I keep odd hours. I'll get MAYBE 2 or 3 hours of sleep a night, work, go home, take a nap (or if I'm REALLY tired, nap during lunch) and then I end up not getting a lot of sleep when it's night time.
I can only thank GOD I don't work 7 days a week. I'd collapse.
And, umm, everyone's parents used to say "Drink warm milk."
Maybe that works. ::shrugs::

Yes, but does it work?
MY parents seemed to favor the "Cold Beer" approach.

I battled insomnia a few years back when I was heavily retrospective and emotionally intense. After about three months, I got so fed up with not sleeping I said "fuck it." I just didn't care anymore. After that I started sleeping better. Apathy is a cure-all.

I don't know about long term insomnia, but on night's when you simply cannot sleep, try sleeping at the other end of the bed. Works every time.

Eat a fresh avacado and drink a cup of warm milk. Before going to bed, stretch your arms above your head for about 10 seconds. When you get in bed, slap your eyes for about 2 minutes. It never fails.

I have the perfect solution. when I can't sleep, I go read The Name of the Rose. it's a difficult book, but, just about any book with small letters will do, then go read, and try to keep reading for as long as possible, you'd get more tired every second, and when you put it down after a while of sleeping, you're gonna fall asleep. it works (I hope)

But wouldn't apathy amount to saying to yourself "I have this problem but I don't care about it."? This would then lead oneself back to the same question "WTF problem am I talking about?... oh, THAT one!" Thus remembered, you're back in the same boat. Seems kind of circular to me. :/

I get it, so, kellychaos is saying that apathy eventually leads to interest and concern!
I'm hoping that this cycle will lead oneself to a dictionary, whereby oneself might approach the definition of fancy words.

Here's lovely bit of irony;
Fatherhood completely cured my chronic insomia. I cn now fall asleep, any time, anywhere, pretty much immediately.
At the same time, my kids both have really bad sleep 'issues' and wake up thee or four times a night each. If they're really in form, they tag team and I get maybe fifteen consecutive minutes of sleep at a time.
The end result? I'm no longer insomnaic, but I don't get anymore sleep.
AIN'T THAT A KICK IN THE HEAD!?

You talkin' 'bout me? I KNOW what apathy means. My questions was "Apathy in relation to that specific problem or apathy in relation to EVERYTHING (see coma :) ).
MrAdventure

But wouldn't apathy amount to...
STOP RIGHT THERE, VIOLATOR!
I have this problem (using big words)...
Apathy doesn't amount to anything!
POW!
ZANG!
THESAURUS!
You wouldn't even give the problem the gratification of acknowledgement. Thus it would never cycle around.

Point taken. I was just trying to give it a Descarte "How do I know I exist?" flavor but if you're talking about "apathy" in it's truest meaning, you're quite correct. :)

Well i would suggest watching some really crappy anime that has absalutly no violence, nudity, or good jokes. Puts me to sleep in no time. Works good if you have a spastic imagination and your convinced that Bill Gates (who originaly was Waldo from the "Where's Waldo?" book sieries, but is now in disguies), Martha Stewert (leader of a cult of house wives and soccer moms), and the Crocidile Hunter (who having no brains, is a zombie) have henchmen who are out trying to kill me cuz... I KNOW THIER LITTLE SECRET! 8-)

When I saw someone with the screen name "Thesaurus" posted in this thread, I thought it was going to be a really bad character giving different synonyms for apathy :(

WOAH lots of people seem to know a thing or two about the Insomnia.
I usually have a hell of a time getting to sleep because I never have a regular sleep pattern. Sometimes I may be working late (i.e. getting home at around 6 AM after a hard night's gigging), or drunk, hungover, whatever. Thankfully, I don't think I've had proper, scary insomnia where you are completely awake, alert and ready for action, and suddenly you realise it's starting to get light and you haven't slept one little bit.
My biggest problem however, especially over the summer where I worked for 3 months in a nightclub, was getting into a pattern of going to sleep around 2, 3, 4 AM and waking up at lunchtime, which was a really difficult cycle to break and made early nights IMPOSSIBLE. The only way is to be hard on yourself, and set your alarm early so you wake up at the proper time, then hopefully you'll be tired enough when you get to bed. If you do go to bed early but can't get to sleep, say "fuck it" and get up and do something. Watch a little TV, read a book, make a sandwich. You'll feel tired eventully.
Once in bed, stop thinking. Sounds crazy, but when I get into bed my mind is always bubbling over with ideas - from computer game designs, to fictional sci-fi scenarios or even planning the next day. Because my brain was still active, it just couldn't switch off. So maybe counting sheep really is the answer. Whatever you do, don't take drugs.
Both my parent's are pharmasists and say that sleeping pills can be split into two basic groups - those which play off a side effect which makes you drowsy (like hay fever medicines) and those which deaden the senses. Don't bother calling the doctor because sadly, there is very little medicine can do to. Only call your doctor if the insomnia starts to rule your life.
You'll almost certainly be ok after a couple of days though, unless it's some serious insomnia. Just make sure you don't worry about insomnia, as it is this which is the most common cause of insomnia itself.
