Bod Bike tests in the UK are even more so than the car ones. The driving test being one of the most notoriously difficult in the world. People on average these days only pass after the third attempt and I almost failed for not washing the wind shield because a bit of dirt was detrimental to health and safety despite the fact I could see where I was going!

But running a 125 is far cheaper, £15 per year road tax, car tax is about four times that (other brits correct me if I'm wrong?) and insurance third party and theft for a year I've been quoted £96, which is dirt cheap.

I can't afford to run a car in this country.

Vexation Aye, bikes are freaking ideal. Well, I don't know about the Susuki 500. I going off the Honda 500-600 sized bikes.

DeadKennedys The last time I drove a 500 it had great acceleration. The design is just so simple that everything works incredibly

Vexation A 500? Might as well go for a enduro bike.

600 should be minimum. A bike's main defense is the ability to accelerate out of danger problems. Sure, you can go highway speeds, but what if you need to accelerate quickly? Like someone is moving into your lane and the car behind you is on your ass?
(happens often for Motorcycles)

DeadKennedys I'm planning on getting a Suzuki GS500F as my first bike, more than capable of highway speeds but isn't too powerful for a beginner, good price, good for above-average height.

Sethomas From my experience, motorcycling is a totally different world in Europe (YES THAT MEANS YOU, BRITONS) because of the layout of the streets and such; it's more practical as a mode of transport. Plus, driving lessons and permits are far more expensive and rigorous, so although motorcycles are inherently dangerous you have less to worry about over there.

In Rome I was blessed with the vision of a biker gang of hot leather-clad chicks, so I might be biased.

Lingering Haze I had a friend in high school who died in a motorcycle accident.
Feb 7th, 2006 01:03 PM
Sethomas Because more people drive cars, maybe?
Feb 7th, 2006 12:59 PM
DamnthatDavid Even so, more people still die from car accidents.

And insurance depends also state from state. Washington only requires you to have property damage. It lowish. I'll find the exact quotes later.

I've got a clean (automotive) record, about how much can I expect to pay each month?

Bod I have a friend who's lost a leg from a motorcycle accident, but then I had a friend who lost all her front teeth in a freak stone-skimming accident.
Feb 6th, 2006 05:36 PM
xbxDaniel Insurance. Like I said though, your situation is probably different from mine. I also don't have to make bike payments, my friend got me a good deal.
Feb 6th, 2006 10:21 AM
DeadKennedys Is that just insurance? Or are you talking about bike payments?
Feb 6th, 2006 07:09 AM
xbxDaniel It depends on whether or not you have a clean record. I don't know how much you pay out there, but it's about 114 dollars a week for me.

What bike is that?
Feb 6th, 2006 12:39 AM
ziggytrix i have two friends who were crippled by motorcycle accidents.

one of em, the guy wasn't doing anything illegal. he just had a car run a stop sign, knocking him off his bike and clipping his shoulder on the car's side mirror. nearly severed his arm, but luckily it was only severely paralyzed.

the other, well i never got the full story on, as we haven't been in touch in a while, but i heard she couldn't walk for a while after her wreck.

they sure are run to ride tho, if some asshole in a car doesn't kill or maim you.

DamnthatDavid I want a Yamaha Naked Bike.

When my tax money returns, I might be able to afford either this:

or this:

Both are selling for roughly 4k.

xbxDaniel Just about any motorcycle magazine without a naked woman on the cover offers riding tips. I also have this book with information on how to properly maintain your motorcycle. I'll have to find it and post the name, that is, if you really want it.
Feb 5th, 2006 10:44 PM
maggiekarp I think everyone wants the bike from Akira, deep down.

My mom rides a motorcycle, and I think it'd be a pretty good investment to get one.

I need to get some actual motorcycle knowledge first, though.

Tara I got a Harley Dyna Rider.

Wanna race?
Feb 5th, 2006 08:20 PM
xbxDaniel My first bike was a Honda Rebel 250. Some fucker ran me off the road my second week with it though.
