Kinda different way to think of it is, if toboacco companies are going to be continuosly banned from media which might be viewed by children, then where can the tobacco industry adverties. I mean off course children are going to watch the Xgames and i am against advertising there, but everywhere tobacco companies are being shot down and denied the right to advertise because kids could see it. |

Sicktodeathmx | I agree that they shouldn't advertise Hustler on Cartoon Network (bad hypo. situation, though). But Bill boards don't make kids smoke.. That is what I am saying. And just I said before and Kelly reinterated, it's the kids rolemodels (their parents) who get them started smoking.

kellychaos | The best children's advertisement for smoking is in forbidding them to do so especially when the parent themself smokes. Just sayin'

Big McLargehuge | Just because kids will smoke regardless of advertising says does not make it moral or ethical to market ciggaretts to children. 13 year old boys will still take there fathers porn and look at it, that doesn't mean that it is all-right for hustler to advertise on cartoon network.

Ads don't make the kids smoke. Simple as that. It's their role models who are to blame! It's kinda like when you are 8 and you see your papa smokin, so you take a cigarette and try it out... And get sick. But none-the-less, you are smoking because your dad did it, and he's your role model. And too many kids already smoke.. Maybe that company is just trying to get them to switch brands |

kahljorn | I agree, everyone knows what smoking is. There is pressure from every direction on the issue. "Don't smoke" at school, from parents, from family, from friends, from the government. They are going to know what smoking is, and what it does. They don't need advertising for that, it's already done.

Perndog | Blah blah blah. Yeah, they advertise to kids. But kids are going to smoke no matter what. It's not about a unified force called "the tobacco industry" trying to get them hooked and create new customers. It's brands jockeying for that part of the market that would exist without even without advertising. I say more power to them. It's Joe Camels fault that kids smoke Camels instead of Kools, not that they smoke in the first place.

Zhukov | But why should corporatins care about your children?
Nov 11th, 2003 11:54 PM | ||
Big McLargehuge | Yes but not all kids have an older brother who gives a shit or even parents who can be bothered to care.

Or just tell your brother what both of mine told me: "We catch you smoking and its your ass" Marketing adult oriented programing? It is an ad for smokes. Besides, who pays for all the crap? Thats right, adults. If your brother starts gunning sticks, it ain't because he saw a flash of an ad as some mook tries to commit popular suicide. |

As for the second point i never said that i thought that all the things that eXtreme marketing and sports are selling children but this is just a chance to show the marketeers my distaste. This should be where the parents step in and stop letting children watch ESPN2 or any of those other networks that carry this adult orentated programming. Maybe this wouldn't mean so much to me if i didn't have a little brother who watches this garbage. Don't get me wrong, I dont think that the government should step in and start regulating who advertises where, i just think that corporations should have some responsibility and not advertise adult products on programming that attracts youth. |

Zhukov | I wouldn't expect them not to target children, it's the smartest way to get future customers. This example is hardly going over the top.

How are the tobacco companies promoting illegal behavior? Adults watch the X-Games, too. X-Games also pimps booze and sex(well, they don't sell it but they use it). |
|
Nov 11th, 2003 07:34 PM | ||
Big McLargehuge | Yes but having people "jump on planks and hurtle themselves down mountains at breakneck speeds" isn't promoting illeagal behavior.
Nov 11th, 2003 06:25 PM | ||
El Blanco | I see Big's point. I mean, its okay to have people jump on planks and hurtle themselves down mountains at breakneck speeds, but don't you dare have a marlboro ad in the frame. That might be bad for kids.
