I responded that way because somebody was trying to be patronizing and/or sarcastic to me when I was merely pointing out the root origin of the word when, of course, I realized that there were slaves prior to the slavs. The main thrust of my argument was in pointing out the fact that people get angry about things they don't even understand or have failed to take upon themselves to research. Also, we can use the word today because it has been established as part of the modern english language. Prior to the subjugation of the slavs, the word "slave" was not in used although the subjugation of humans was occurring whatever the label that they may have given it.

The_Rorschach ". . .the Greeks were slaves to the Romans, and so on."

There was nothing selective about Roman slavery practices, Greeks were slaves, but so were Germans, Numidians,Samnites, Jews and anyone else whom look interesting or useful. The Romans even had a dedicated court in order to ensure the rights of slaves -For a Roman slave was not truly a second class citizens. They could own property, they could own their own slaves, and recieved payment from their masters which, if they so desired, they could place into their peculium - a sort of trust account which could be used to buy their freedom. In fact, some slaves became famous Roman citizens, purchising not only citizenship but the broad stripe as well, becoming members of the Senate. Hoorah Rome!

They were centuries more civilized then than any country currently in existance.

True but the word "slave" wasn't used to denote those people at that time and, though the spirit of those people's station in life was the same, applying the word to them would be anachronistic.

CrazyAmericanScum A lot of posts for something so ignorant.

Nothing is wrong with Master and slave titles, in there proper place.

Computers are not really a liable example of this at all. Just goes to show people in California need lives.

El Blanco Hold up. White people didn't invent slavery? Holy shit.

Next you're going to tell me it was West Africans that went and captured slaves for European traders.

kellychaos Perhaps a little research into the etymology of the word would reveal that not only does it not denote any single race of people that have been slaves (unless you count the roots in Slavic history and I don't hear and slavs complaining or that have been slaves since the middle ages) but that the most recent slaves were not the ONLY slaves in history. Long story short: Get over yourselves!

Word History:

The derivation of the word slave encapsulates a bit of European history and explains why the two words slaves and Slavs are so similar; they are, in fact, historically identical. The word slave first appears in English around 1290, spelled sclave. The spelling is based on Old French esclave from Medieval Latin sclavus, “Slav, slave,” first recorded around 800. Sclavus comes from Byzantine Greek sklabos (pronounced sklävs) “Slav,” which appears around 580. Sklavos approximates the Slavs' own name for themselves, the Slovnci, surviving in English Slovene and Slovenian. The spelling of English slave, closer to its original Slavic form, first appears in English in 1538. Slavs became slaves around the beginning of the ninth century when the Holy Roman Empire tried to stabilize a German-Slav frontier. By the 12th century stabilization had given way to wars of expansion and extermination that did not end until the Poles crushed the Teutonic Knights at Grunwald in 1410. ·As far as the Slavs' own self-designation goes, its meaning is, understandably, better than “slave” it comes from the Indo-European root *kleu-, whose basic meaning is “to hear” and occurs in many derivatives meaning “renown, fame.” The Slavs are thus “the famous people.” Slavic names ending in -slav incorporate the same word, such as Czech Bohu-slav, “God's fame,” Russian Msti-slav, “vengeful fame,” and Polish Stani-slaw, “famous for withstanding (enemies).”

Perndog Sacred cow may come from Hinduism, but it's a generic term. Onions is equally generic - onions, smelly, unpleasant, etc.

Hamburger with cheese would sound retarded.

Further supporting my conclusion that you take yourself way, way too seriously and you are painfully lacking a sense of humor.
Nov 26th, 2003 01:31 AM
Sethomas Pernpup, your signature would be better if it were a hamburger with cheese instead of onions, that way it would violate Mosaic Law and thus be offensive to overly zealous Jews as well as Hindus.

"PC stands for Politically Correct. We of the Politically Correct philosophy believe in increasing a tolerance for a DIVERSITY of cultures, race, gender, ideology and alternate lifestyles. Political Correctness is the only social and morally acceptable outlook. Anyone who disagrees with this philosophy is bigoted, biased, sexist, and/or closed-minded. "

And yet somehow the PC movement has done the exact opposite. I swear, when I was growing the kids I knew were racially blind. At least until the PC movement.....[/quote]
