I think the reason that Yorimaru's homosexuality is not more overt is that in Japan homosexuality is not looked upon all that favorably. So they had to downplay Yormaru's sexuality. It is one of the best anime's ever though.

NINJA SCROLL!
Best anime, period. Another movie I can never get sick of watching. A close second would be the Bastard! series.
