AChimp What if it happened as you were driving past a gas station, huh?
Mar 14th, 2004 01:03 PM
Mockery But that won't happen, because the Ford Expedition would run out of gas before it came into contact with you. You have to refill those things with gas every .25 miles. :o

AChimp Small cars are fun to drive UNTIL YOU GET SQUASHED BY A MASSIVE FORD EXPEDITION.

Mockery Hah, don't expect me to spend more than like... 1500 - 2000 on a car. I'm not planning on getting one of the newer models...
Mar 14th, 2004 03:14 AM
Geggy actually they still make vw rabbits, except that they've changed the name from rabbit to GTI, which also comes with the powerful VR6 engine model. however i dont see the point of spending anything over 15,000 for a car.

i absolutely love compact cars. the zig-zagginess of small cars makes it so much fun to drive, i could care less for the speed. there are a lot of other cars to check out besides like the vw's, like the ford focus svt, mini cooper, honda civic si, subaru wrx, etc. out of all the choices, i'd go for the civic si for it's reliability, the focus svt for the fun of driving experience.

I am currently typing this from my mother's computer, as I still haven't been able to fix mine.

I have in front of me the April 2004 issue of Consumer Reports, and while there is no information on the Rabbit, there is a great deal of info on the Golf. Here it is.

For the Voltswagon Golf: (get someone who can interpret this)

------------------------------------
Body styles available: 2- or 4-door hatchback
Reliability (basic car reliability): Poor
Satisfaction (based on average consumer satisfaction, also whether the person would buy the car again): Good
Depreciation (average of 45 percent): Good

Drive: Front or AWD
Seating: 2 front, 3 back
Engines: 1.9L 4-cylinder turbodiesel (100 hp); 2.0L 4-cylinder (115 hp); 1.8L 4-cylinder turbo (180 hp); 2.8L V6 (200 hp); 3.2L V6 (240 hp)

* Occupant sensing: side
* Side: standard front
* Head protection: standard
* Accident alert: Available
ABS: standard

Stability control: optional
Daytime running lights: standard

Price: $15,580 - $29,100

Last full report: Dec. 2000

Description: Though it's a well-designed small car, we can't recommend the Golf because its reliability has remained well below average. It handles nimbly and has a supple, quiet ride. The interior has a high-quality feel - unusual for this price class. The seats are firm and supportive, but the rear is cramped. The standard 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine is responsive but noisy and relatively thirsty. The sporty GTI model's 1.8-liter turbo and VR6 are punchy and smooth. The turbodiesel Golf TDI with a manual transmission averaged 41 mpg overall in our tests. Crash-test results are impressive. The new R32 is a high-performance AWD model with a V6.

------------------------------

The Voltswagon Golf is in the Consumer Report's Used Cars to Avoid list, for models years '96-03. It is a repeat offender, a category for cars with much-worse-than-average reliability for several years in a row.

Reliability histories for this model are below:

Engine: Good overall
Cooling: good overall
Fuel: Bad for '96, '99, and '00 models
Ignition: bad for '96 model
Transmission: bad for '96 model
Electrical: bad for '00-01 models, awful for prior models
Air conditioning: bad for '97 model
Suspension: good to excellent overall
Brakes: bad for all models prior to '02, except for '98 model
Exhaust: bad for models prior to '99
Paint/trim/rust: awful for models prior to '99
Integrity: awful for models prior to '01
Power equipment: Bad to awful for all models prior to '03
Body hardware: bad to awful for all models prior to '01, except for '98 models
----------------------------------

Let me know if you are thinking of other cars, and I will give you a report on them.

Evil Robot I can tell you things that would help sell the car if you tell me the first 11 digits of the VIN number (the last 6 digits is the serial number, I don't need that). Look through the lower left corner of the windsheild, it's stamped onto a metal tag.

phnompehn Get the Oscar Mayer Weiner-Mobile and paint it green. It'd either look like a giant pickle, or a magical green didlo on wheels.

THE MOCK-MOBILE IS FOR SALE :O

I'm selling my car, a 1991 Pontiac Sunbird Convertible. It's in fair condition, it runs fine though it needs a few repairs. And yeah, it does have a CD player in it too.

Thought I'd check here to see if anybody was interested in it before I go posting about it on some livejournal or newspapers. It's a solid car best for in-town driving. I wouldn't take it on a cross country trip or anything, but it's definitely aok for all your local needs.

Here's a few pics of it:
