thanks to everyone who replied with advice, but i have it pretty much covered now. i'm going the healthy start (state aid) route until this company decides to hire me full time...which may be never. i really started this thread to hear other people's experiences about obtaining or not having health insurance. you all really need not worry about me giving birth under a bridge. it will not happen. ![]() |

I'm currently temping at a Hospital, and this morning, I posted Glowbelly's question on our Values Board. The women suggested that you see a doctor and ask him/her about charity care. You'd have to pay it back slowly. Some hospitals offer financial aid, so you might want to look into that, too. If you lived in New York, it would be a lot easier to help you. Now, seriously, folks... How many of us are waiting for Vince Zeb to storm in here, and tell Glowbelly what an irresponsible slut she is, and then make some kind of misogynist joke? ![]() My thoughts are with you, Karen. |

I've nothing to offer financially or informationally, but my thoughts and prayers will be with you Belly. How sad you have to endure what should be such a beautiful experience through such arduous circumstances. Yet in the time I have known you, I've come to the conclusion you are both very clever and extremely resourceful, I've little doubt you will find a way to resolve this situation to your satisfaction. If not, perhaps we can convince Carni to steal an ambulance, retrieve and then deliver you to a Mass. Hospital under an assumed name thereafter whisking you away once labour is concluded. . . . Well, maybe if life were a sitcom anyway. |

I've only had health insurance for two years out of my entire life, and it was MassHealth. I was 14, 15, and I still didn't go to the doctor, and it's almost impossible to find a dentist that takes MassHealth, so I didn't go. Medicine is for the weak and timid. Boil some water and get lots of towels. (P.S. Really, good luck. I don't have anything helpful to suggest. ![]() |

i can afford health insurance, kahl...it's just that right now, nobody will insure me because i have a pre-existing condition. $1,144.85 a month, however, is out of the question...and that's the only policy that i can buy that will cover the delivery. the point i was trying to make is that according to almost everyone i have talked to, i am better off making less money right now so i can get on this healthy start program. it makes no sense to me whatsoever that there isn't some kind of program that lets you pay into your own insurance. i can afford up to about $250 a month. for an individual policy, that's kind of high, but like i said, pregnancy = pre-existing when it comes to individual policies. |

EisigerBiskuit | I'm pretty sure I'm ensured. If not, then I would probobably be dead by now after the whole misquito/snake accident.

kahljorn | No offense, but if y ou can't afford insurance, how are you going to be able to afford insurance for the baby, and baby food, and highchair's and toys? That shit gets expensive.

While were on the topic, I had a quick question pertaining to this that I've never quite understood.. So I hear about these stories of people being turned away from hospitals becuase they don't have insurance. Do you actually NEED insurance to get treatment at a hospital? Meaning that you can't just pay for it yourself? Give them the money for medication right there. Write a check or give them a credit card. Get a loan at the bank and deal with the bankruptcy later. Any thing like that. Are you not allowed to just spend your own money at the time an accident occures or something? |

![]() Personally I would check into the hospital with fake information and just hope that I get out of there before they catch on to my fraud. |

When you said open enrollment, were you talking about in new private healthcare? COBRA is extendable for up to 18 months, and I heard a rumor that you could opt out until you needed it then opt back in paying up the premiums... That might be even more expensive than just paying for everything out of pocket, but my worry would be that some babies can be much more expensive to deliver than others, and you don't get to pick... I guess that option's viability would depend on how pregant you are, though. You should probably be planning on the most expensive scenario and consider EVERY possible alternative, protecting yourself as much as possible. My sister was in a similar situation, living in Indiana (likely similar to your state in terms of social safety nets,) and she moved down here to Georgia, which is about the best place to be if your pregnant and broke. Throughout your life you'll likely have many jobs. Having a healthy kid is something you won't get a chance to do over. Our system is as it is. There's just no point in risking lives over making a point about it. It should be changed, of course, but that's not to happen in time to do you any good. If Ohio isn't right for you, vote with your feet and protect your family. |

Royal Tenenbaum | LOL, being poor in the States sucks ass. I can't believe this is what it's actually like. How could someone actually continue to stay in such a shitty country? I agree with Chimp and his theory. Come to Canada and have the kid, and then complain to the newspapers. It'll work like a charm.

Don't Americans have baby showers, too? You just have to invite lots of people so you can get more stuff to sell later. ![]() |
