From the article itself

Quote:
A worsening labor market has made it more difficult for out-of-work people to find jobs and has made those who have jobs worry about keeping them, major factors coloring spending decisions, economists said.
WORSENING

Quote:
The nation's unemployment rate rose to 5.8 percent in February as the economy lost 308,000 jobs. Economists believe the jobless rate will move up to 6 percent in March and higher in coming months.
Where here is some growth....the unemployment rate grew

Quote:
The spending and income figures aren't adjusted for inflation. When they are, the picture looks worse.
and

Quote:
Adjusted for price changes, consumer spending fell by 0.4 percent in February, after a 0.2 percent decline in January. And inflation-adjusted disposal income dropped 0.2 percent in February, erasing a 0.2 percent advance the month before.
This shows that after the adjutments that little .2% doesn't exist.

Just thought I'd point this out.

Absolutely. The growth of the GNP is of little consequence when:

GNP - Expenditures of Multi-Billion Dollar War = Huge Deficit

Especially when some of those UN countries that supported us during the last Gulf War STILL haven't paid their tab. Maybe that's why some didn't support us this time. Their tab was already too big.

kellychaos Short War = small short-term economic growth with a chance of economic recovery

Long Protracted War = the small short term growth doesn't mean shit and the only ones to benefit are those under the umbrella of the military industrial complex

That's basic economics and it applies fairly consistently to almost all development of post-war countries. Remember the '70s?

What was your point anyway, Ronnie? War is good?

AChimp Ronnie, look at it this way. When a company says that it will grow 20% in the next year, and then, in the third quarter, tells everyone that they guessed wrong and are actually only gonna grow 8%, that company's stock plummets and they have to lay thousands of workers off.

Now, how is this any different than the U.S. economy and the recent announcements about how much growth there actually was?
Mar 28th, 2003 01:46 PM
mburbank AND he hates what Jesus stands for.

Naldo. I already refuted your silly little prayer in school argument and in the bargain got you to say you'd support Satnist Prayer in theclassroom, which no one believes you mean.

I think I actually said that whie I would personally not like it at all, I would support someone right to do it as long as everyone elses religion got equal time. And I pointed out the difficulties there in. I know this puts me center of left on a single issue and that's almost impossible for you to cope with, but THAT'S how important I think the Freedom of Speech is.

So, what were you saying again?

FS wow! First he's un-American, now he's anti-American. Will he be European by next week?

Ronnie, you may find normal laws open to interpretation, but economical laws are laws even you can't bend. I bet you love that word growth but like Max said, not all growths are automatically good. The economy of a country as big as the US will always grow. Hell, the economy of a country as small as mine will, too. What matters is the percentage of growth each year.
Mar 28th, 2003 07:59 AM
Ronnie Raygun Max, is against the first amendment thereby anti-American.

Back to topic.

No matter how you spin it, growth is good. Some might say that the economy is always growing.....These people clearly don't understand what a DEPRESSION is.

I think Ronnie posted this as a joke. I mean, he can't really be this stupid, can he?

Nope. I said it's getting better. Maybe you don't know this but "growth" when concerning the economy...IS GOOD!

"You mind explaining to me how this article indicates that the economy is in fact doing better as you say, because It looks like I've either missed something or the link is wrong."

Let me say it again, GROWTH IS GOOD!
Not when it is less growth than would be expected. A baby who has dwarfism grows to be barely two and half feet tall as an adult. Is that good?
Mar 27th, 2003 01:50 PM
mburbank Not all Growths are good. Ask your Doctor.

And I'm sorry, Naldo, but unless you state something America stands for (which you've done exactly once) and state why I hate it (which you have failed to do spectacularly by showing that I personally don't care for prayer in school led by a paid official and ludicrously stating that you would be fine with satanism in the classroom as long as one child was a practicing Satanist) I don't have time to play footsie with you.

Haven't you heard? There's a new girl in town.

The 1.4 percent growth rate marked a sharp slowdown in the economy from the 4 percent pace registered in the third quarter of 2002. Since the end of 2001, economic growth has been jagged, with a quarter of strength followed by a quarter of weakness.
Quote:
In the final quarter of 2002, consumer spending grew at a rate of just 1.7 percent, slightly better than the government's previous estimate, but a sharp pullback from the 4.2 percent growth rate registered in the third quarter.

The 1.4 percent growth rate for GDP in the fourth quarter was the slowest since the second quarter of 2002, when the economy expanded at a below-par 1.3 percent rate.

What will happen in this quarter? Who knows for sure.....

All I can do is present the facts.
