Heh, just to get him off the screen... Oh by the way the commercial I posted above is on the site I posted in the initial post (that's why I try to always include a link to whatever I'm talking about), once the site is loaded you click on the TV in the upper right corner (it says "video evidence"). They have all the commercials from that series on there, my fave is the 4th one "Captured".

Grislygus I like Allstate's commericals, where a middle aged man tells me that there is a one hundred and twenty percent chance that my house will catch fire, my car will be crushed, my fields will be burned, my animals killed and my family raped, and that no one should go through that alone. That's Allstate's stand.

Just makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.

Still, I think my favorite is the Mercury one where the "UFO expert" is convinced that he's found evidence in the backwoods of some hick state, and he meets said hick and the guy shows him the "alien" and the ufo expert is like "That's an armadillo".

Mockery I'd have to go with Geico's caveman commercial series:

AngryTinyMan I like the old Eastwood Insurance commercials. Someone would have a problem with their car, then a cowboy randomly walks up and tells them to switch to Eastwood. Each commercial ended with the guy going, "Thanks, stranger! ...stranger?" Then the cowboy just sort of dissolves away.

Fathom Zero That Progressive commercial is great because the guy says, "Sweet, it's a plastic cow." in a monotone voice. It really cracks me up every time I see it.

sloth The best adverts in the UK are for loans, because apparently the british can't get enough of spending money they don't have. They will almost always follow the same formula to a tee, which begins by choosing a cringeworthy metaphor for financial difficulties - a desert island, hurdles (the best - old people jump over minature hurdles shot from below to make them look life-sized), an array of locked doors. These would represent the many and varied obstacles that any sane person would realise indicates high time to stop borrowing: criminal convictions, bankrupcy and so on.

If any people are featured it will almost certainly be a rainbow of ethnicity and obesity, to indicate these companies have no qualms lending out extortionate rates provided there's enough house to seize if the payments stop.

They'll also make sure to remind you how their generous offer may leave money left over after paying off the debts, which could perhaps go towards "the holiday you always dreamt of", "that new car" or maybe just to "put away for a rainy day". Because, I don't know, putting up the roof over your head as surety isn't rainy enough, and it's not like saving money at a lower interest than the loan interest you're paying on it is stupid at all?

What’s your favorite car insurance gimmick? The talking gecko? The gruff cowboy? What makes you feel the most automotive safety?

I like the new one from Mercury (www.mercurytheory.com). If you haven’t seen it they are making the claim that the owners of Mercury are from Mercury and they’ve got all the corroborative evidence including a 10X magnification of burnt toast (check out the slides) that proves everything. Makes me chuckle.
