Kitsa Agh, that means I would have to hack it out of there again! Getting so tired of doing that
Oct 30th, 2013 04:59 PM
Tadao I would put a stronger PSI pump in there if it can fit and get the top really spurting out. Even if it is after Halloween and it's just clear water. Seems like the PSI is too weak to push the water all the way up the long height.

Kitsa

Finally got it working, sort of. Still have some leveling issues. The pump is a Tetra aquarium pump and the damn cord was six inches shorter than the old cord, which resulted in comedy when I tried to make the thing reach to the extension post in the garden from where it was perfectly lined up with windows etc.

I think part of the problem with the leveling is that it's been disassembled, reassembled and caulked so many times that it's not fitting together quite the same way. I shoved a rock under one side and that fixed it a little, but not too much.

I hot-glued pennies to the bottoms of the eyeballs so they wouldn't roll.

Kitsa I've fiddled with that, setting it to the middle just in case I was mistaken about which end was on and which was off. The pain in the ass thing is that you have to assemble the fountain, check it, then disassemble again if it's not right

Tadao Could it be that the pump volume isn't turned up enough? Some time by the water intake vent there is a dial or you can open the vent more or something to allow more strength. Other than that, maybe a stronger pump?

Kitsa This thing doesn't have the aquarium-style tubing, it's a pipe that is threaded and runs up through the center piece. I've taken it out and checked it and washed it over and over and over. There didn't appear to be anything clogging the intake of the old pump and the new one is right out of the box. The threaded rigid plastic piece fits into a brace that holds the pump inside the column of the bottom basin, if that makes sense. I think part of the problem is suction loss somewhere, but I can't figure out where. I've caulked the bottom below the pump with silicone.

It's infuriating because you can get the pump working in a basin of water, establish that it's working, but you can't get the fountain to work without putting the pump in, sealing it, assembling the whole works to get the pipe in the correct position, etc. And if the pump is new out of the box and working in the basin but not working in a cleaned and reassembled fountain, I'm sort of stumped. I was hoping it was a priming issue and poured water straight down the tube for half an hour...it just gurgled and drained into the bottom basin. I was so overcome with the joy of doing all of this over and over on a 40 degree windy day that I damn near kicked the fucker across the yard.

I've got all the pieces laid out again and I'll try to give it another go this afternoon. It was too expensive to just scrap. I'm even considering finding a smaller-gauge tube to thread up through the existing one, but I'm afraid of what I'd do if it doesn't work.

Tadao If you plug it into an outlet outside of water, do you feel/hear the fan motor turn? If no, have you tried a known working outlet? I'm sure you have but I always start with "Is the power on?"

If the fan turns out and in the the water, then the tube that goes through the fountain wight be clogged with bugs and dirt or leaves. Try a coat hanger to see if you can unblock it.

Kitsa ARRRGGH

I have replaced the pump in the fountain. I have taken it apart MANY times, cleaned each piece, and carefully put it back. I have checked the motherfucking ground fault. Is there any other reason it would not work?

It's not because it's clogged with eyeballs because I took those out.

dextire Wow, Mothman looks amazing! I'm seriously impressed.

That was obviously the correct solution. It looks great.

Kitsa Yeah, I should have thought it out better but I was mainly concerned with getting it up. I'll have to look at that, because the eyes are coolest when they're really bright.
Oct 25th, 2013 04:14 PM
Tadao Maybe a AC to DC transformer from radioshack next time. I used to use them all the time for 9v guitar pedals. I'm sure there is a wire splice solution if it's AAA-D style.

Kitsa Thanks. I don't think the landlord is a fan of Mothman, but it probably won't be a problem as long as I take him down after Halloween. I could have done a way better job painting, but I wanted him peeking out from behind the greenery and when he got set up I had to work around the greenery to paint. Some of the stuff on the house side had to be done in random lunges. Then I ran out of paint and had to blackwash the back with some paint and water in a bucket.

The eyes are eating through battery life, though They're already getting dim after a week. I'll have to conserve till Halloween.

LordSappington Damn, Kitsa, that all looks awesome! Mothman is my favorite; he's always held that special part in my heart

Kitsa Yeah. Now, keep in mind, this is just basically a giant rendering of the police sketch. I thought that was kind of creepy enough. Shitty thing was, I had to have help putting him up and that didn't go by my schedule, so I had to throw him up there half-painted and do the rest with him standing. I think the quality kind of suffered.

Here he is during the day while I was going back and adding detail. The eyes are red LEDs mounted in the reflective cups of some cheapass flashlights. I just flip the switch on the 9V battery box at night.

And here's the effect at nighttime. I had a "WATCH FOR MOTHMAN" sign I put up nearby.

I also got pissed off at my fountain because the pump died, so I filled it with blood and eyeballs. I've since replaced the pump and I'm hoping to have an eyeball fountain actively spewing blood for halloween.

I was tired of the zombie barbie garden and thought I'd do something different this year.

dextire Wow, six feet?! So less of a "harbinger of bad things to come" and more of a "I'm going to eat you" Mothman.
Could you post some pictures?
Oct 18th, 2013 08:40 PM
Kitsa I made a six-foot-tall rendition of the infamous Mothman police sketch, wired it with red LEDs and reflective eye sockets, and hid it in the bushes behind a WATCH FOR MOTHMAN sign.

I was out painting on it yesterday and looked over and the landlord was staring from the yard of the vacant house next door.
