Ninjavenom I did look up The Blasters a little while ago, and i even told Rongi about them. Good stuff.

Also looked up the Angry Samoans, and i like them a lot too. "Inside My Brain" is quite the nifty little ditty.

Already have some Black Flag, but i'll scope all the other stuff you've got there.

UnDeath I know this is a semi old topic, but Ive noticed that nobody has mentioned Samhain, even tho they arent totally punk, but more of a metal/punk hybrid...

glowbelly elvis is brilliant.

Queefer Sutherland Haha! That reply is funny because of the strange truth it has to it. On the other hand, it's hard for me to say whether he was punk or powerpop, and from what I know, Emo is the sadder end of hardcore specifically. Either way that's a damn good answer, and I wish it had at least crossed my mind(not to mention the fact that Elvis' voice has similarities to Guy's!.)

Black Flag Elvis Costello
Apr 6th, 2003 09:08 PM
Queefer Sutherland That's probably true, on a musical level. Who would you say was the first, or at least who predated them?

The thing about Emo is that it seemed to start out as a certain subgenre from HC on a musical level, but quickly just became a scene since not every punk band that was "emotional" was called emo. I think the ROS may have been the first to be CALLED emo, but of course that has little to do with the music. It's hard to say who were the first punk band to focus on the emotions expressed by ROS.

what's the earliest Emo you can think of?
Apr 6th, 2003 03:39 PM
Black Flag Rites of Spring were not the first emo band.
Apr 6th, 2003 03:36 PM
Queefer Sutherland What about all the pre-90s punk bands? Many of them are so far unmentioned on this thread.

Jerry's Kids-Is this My World?
Agent Orange-Living In Darkness
Adolescents-ST
Minor Threat(of course)
Poison Idea
Gauze
GISM
Raw Power
Die Kreuzen
DI
Oh, fuck it. I could go on all day...that's a good list to start with. THAT'S some real punk for ya.

Rites of Spring were GREAT. First Emo band, before "Emo" became something totally different and inferior.
