Ex Leper I would much rather watch Mahakaal instead.

Shadowdancer21b So I have to speak on the topic because I am a passionate fan of the Nightmare on Elm Street series. I have seen each one. I liked most of them. I even wrote an essay about how these films, Freddy Kreuger himself, and the themes prevalent in the films shaped my childhood; being as they were, about growing up first and foremost. Trust me.

That being said, the remake, by Platinum Dunes, AKA the assholes responsible for all those recent shitty horror remakes; have left all of the deeper story subtext (remember when movies had subtext?) back in the 80’s where it damn well belongs. Or something. So, to make things nice and clear, this is not a retelling, it is a “re-imagining”. We have a character named Nancy, but she is not Nancy from the original. There is Freddy Kreuger, and he was a groundskeeper/handyman at a school, and he was accused of killing children and got off the hook and was later burned to death by vengeful parents, but the similarities end there.

In this film the pedophile angle of Kreuger’s character is brought to the forefront rather than being implied. They really ramp it up. Jackie Earl Haley does a good job with “being” Kreuger, but his voice is annoying and his dialogue is sometimes good and menacing, other times stupid. It’s a tough call. I like Robert Englund better. He was more theatrical in his portrayal, in his movements and so forth. But Jackie Earl gets points for trying his own portrayal rather than aping Englund. So it’s a close call.

There is not one damn character we care about in this movie. This is a Platinum Dunes problem. They NEVER bother writing good characters. There are jump scares a-plenty and of course the jump scare’s twin, the fake scare. I thought we had left those behind, but I’m a fool, obviously. The nightmare sequences are cool in this one, as there is a unifying theme to them, rather than the person-specific set pieces in the original. Everything keeps coming back to the school and the boiler room, Freddy’s domain. This was something I truly enjoyed.

The special effects are good, and once the plot gets moving it’s pretty good. The ending was a bit disappointing with the requisite stupid one-liner before the deathblow. I hated the one-liner and the ending. I was still very entertained. It’s a flawed but enjoyable film! It truly is! I prefer the original, and I really was jarred out of it when I realized they were going to set up nods to the original. I hated the nods to the original. Those only served to be annoying and remind me that I could have been watching a superior film.

Should the remake have a sequel? Hell no. Should this remake even exist? NO. Is it worth a watch? Yes. This is in my category of “worth watching once”. Something enjoyable that probably will not stand up in later viewings. 2.5/5

Shadowdancer out!

robo_rob At least Englands in it.

Hangie Englund is going to cameo as a school principal fo sho.

10,000 Volt Ghost Any news if Englund is going to Cameo or are they saving that for a sequel?

Dimnos Guess I never really gave a shit about his back story. Burned guy with knife glove killing kids in creative ways in their sleep was all I cared about. Could have called him the boogeyman and said he was never human and I wouldnt have gave a shit.

Fathom Zero Fuck it, it'll be a good movie to see with one of those... what're they called? Oh yeah; girls. It'll be an alright movie with alright special and visual effects.

But, then, I haven't seen it yet like robo_rob seems to have.

captain516 Maybe it's some split personality disorder bullshit that causes him to subconciously murder kids.
Sep 30th, 2009 11:47 PM
robo_rob Maybe he possibly doesn't think he did anything wrong.

But then that makes him once again, not Freddy.
Sep 30th, 2009 07:42 PM
Zomboid Well, yeah. "You burned me alive under the false assumption that I killed that kid, so now I'm angry!" is a lot less effective than "Yeah, I murdered and molested a bunch of your kids, and now, thanks to you, I can do whatever I want to them."

They could say out of revenge, but that would be the worst possible thing to do. I'm hoping that he is just lying to keep from getting killed.

Ugh. Hadas nailed it, though. It goes against the core of the character; he was an evil guy way before he was able to go into dreams, and that's a very large part of what made him such a jerk.

Dimnos I only got a glimpse of it but I thought the new makeup looked good.

10,000 Volt Ghost "For appropriate audiences." ......really?
Sep 30th, 2009 07:49 AM
RaNkeri "creepy" children singing "creepy" songs, are they for real?

EDIT: And yeah, Freddy looks lame :<
Sep 30th, 2009 02:46 AM
Zomboid It reminds me of the Ghoul Mask in Fallout 3.
Sep 30th, 2009 12:58 AM
Fathom Zero Oh, if he doesn't kill children anymore, I'm gonna be disappointed. I guess he can be a pedophile.

And how the fuck does he hurt any different? He sounds different, obviously, but he's got the stature right and I'm sure the makeup is going to be really good.

Zomboid Guys, you can't spoil a fucking trailer.

The no Robert England things is a total bummer, I always knew eventually somebody else would play Freddy... but that is one tough act to follow.

Not to mention, what Freddy says during that lynch mob part of the trailer... I just hope that isn't in the final film... or what it implies. I can't get the spoiler tag working right, so I'll just have to be vague.
Yeah, I really hope they didn't to much revision to the backstory but with all remakes comes that great downfall.

DougClayton4231 Really? It's not like Jason where he was silent and behind a mask. It's Freddy! You can't fuck up a classic like this.
