ziggytrix If he'd worn a red devil costume, that is to say according to Christians, dressed as the incarnition of the supreme evil force in the universe, there'd not have been any scandal, I'd bet.

the_dudefather i have a cutting of the Sun pic on my wall at the mo as its the most hilarious article ever

consider this:

-1- it was a party
-2- harry is a dumbass
-3- nazis are seen as comical supervillians by most people these days because of 'the producers', so any kind of 'watering down' of their evil is impossible
-4- the whole 'its only several weeks untill some anniversery of WW2'. there IS ALWAYS a WW2 related anniversery any time soon, the end of the war, the start of the war, d-day, etc.

the only reason the media are outraged is beacuse they have a humorous picture of prince harry, and they had to say it was disgraceful if they wanted to show it

Britain's gaffe-prone royal family
Thursday, January 13, 2005 Posted: 1418 GMT (2218 HKT)

LONDON, England (Reuters) -- Prince Harry, 20-year-old grandson of the queen, apologized on Thursday after a photo of him wearing Nazi symbols at a party provoked outrage.

Here are some other embarrassing moments involving Britain's royal family:

Royal family and Nazis
Edward VIII, Harry's great-great uncle, is accused of being a Nazi sympathizer. After giving up the throne to marry divorced American Wallace Simpson in 1937, the couple visited Germany and met Hitler, voicing admiration for his policies.

There are also claims Simpson passed on information to the Nazis because she was having an affair with Joachim von Ribbentrop, Germany's foreign minister.

The father of Princess Michael of Kent, who is married to the queen's cousin, was Austrian Baron Gunther Von Reibnitz who had connections to the Nazi party.

Queen's husband, Prince Philip
On a trip to China in the 1980s, he warned British students: "You'll get slitty eyes if you stay too long."

In 1999, while on a tour of a company near Edinburgh, Scotland, he saw a poorly wired fuse box. "It looks as though it was put in by an Indian," he remarked.

While touring Australia in 2002, the prince asked an Aborigine whether they still threw spears at each other.

In 2001, Philip told a 13-year-old boy whose ambition was to go into space that he was too fat to be an astronaut.

During a visit to Oban in Scotland in 1995 he asked a driving instructor: "How do you keep the natives off the booze long enough to pass the (driving) test?"

In 1993, Philip told a Briton he met in Hungary: "You can't have been here that long -- you haven't got a pot belly."

Heir to the throne, Prince Charles
Amid a tabloid frenzy in 2003, the prince denies innuendo of an alleged sexual incident with a servant -- without either the papers or the prince saying what it was he was denying.

A newspaper intercepted a phone call between Charles and and his lover Camilla Parker Bowles in 1993 in which the prince said he wanted to be reincarnated as her tampon.

Queen's daughter, Princess Anne
Became the first British royal to be convicted of a criminal offence in 350 years in 2002 when she pleaded guilty for failing to stop one of her dogs biting two children.

A grumpy Anne told a pensioner who waited outside church on Christmas Day in 2000 to give her a gift: "What a ridiculous thing to do."

Queen's youngest son, Prince Edward
Edward was ridiculed by the media for organizing a royal version of slapstick gameshow "It's a Knockout."

He angered his own family and broke media guidelines when his TV company filmed his own nephew Prince William while at university in 2001.

The same year his wife Sophie was caught out in a newspaper sting making disparaging remarks about the queen, the late queen mother and Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York
In 1992, photos of a topless Sarah Ferguson, ex-wife of the queen's second son Andrew, showed her kissing and apparently having her toes sucked by her "financial adviser," Texan John Bryan, in front of her two small daughters.

Princess Michael of Kent
Dubbed "Princess Pushy" by the British press, she allegedly told a group of black diners in a New York restaurant in 2004 to "go back to the colonies."

Prince Harry
Harry gets involved in a scuffle with a photographer after leaving a nightclub in 2004.

In 2002 he admitted dabbling in marijuana and under-age drinking.

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's Prince Harry on Thursday ruled out visiting Auschwitz as atonement for wearing a Nazi uniform at a party just two weeks before the 60th anniversary of the death camp's liberation.

Jewish groups had demanded the 20-year-old grandson of Queen Elizabeth make the symbolic gesture as a way of apologizing for wearing a swastika armband and an army shirt with Nazi regalia at a costume party on Saturday.

The prince has apologized for his "mistake" but Jewish rights groups and politicians said he should do more.

"This was a shameful act displaying insensitivity for the victims, not just for those soldiers of his own country who gave their lives to defeat Nazism but to the victims of the Holocaust ..." said Rabbi Marvin Hier, dean of the U.S.-based Simon Wiesenthal Center.

He added in a statement: "We strongly urge Prince Harry to accompany the British delegation on January 27th to the Auschwitz death camp to commemorate 60 years since liberation. There he will see the results of the hated symbol he so foolishly and brazenly chose to wear."

A royal official said he understood the calls for the prince to go to Auschwitz but there were no plans for him to attend any of the ceremonies.

"It would be a distraction and a detraction from the importance of the occasion because it would become a different story in media terms," the official told Reuters.

"He recognizes he made a very bad mistake and he apologizes for that. There are no plans for him to say anything more."

The Nazis murdered six million Jews and millions of others including Poles, homosexuals, Soviet prisoners and Gypsies. Millions more were imprisoned or forced to work as slaves.

Photographs of the younger son of the late Princess Diana and heir to the throne Prince Charles in Nazi attire appeared in Britain's Sun newspaper, in Israeli papers and on Web sites around the world.

Harry, third in line to the throne, said in a statement he was sorry if he had caused any offence. "It was a poor choice of costume and I apologize," he said.

"INTOLERABLE"

Prime Minister Tony Blair (news - web sites) said: "Prince Harry has made it clear he is very sorry about it and I think the rest of it is best to leave to Buckingham Palace."

Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom was less sympathetic, saying the use of Nazi symbols was intolerable.

"I think anybody who tries to pass it off as bad taste must be made aware that this can encourage others to think that perhaps that period was not as bad as we teach the young generation in the free world," he told reporters.

Conservative opposition leader Michael Howard, who is Jewish, told BBC Radio: "It would be appropriate if we heard from him in person about how contrite he is."

Royal commentator Robert Lacey said he was just "a messed up kid" and should be left alone. "He clearly got it wrong. It is a very fine line and Harry stepped over it. But he has apologized and we have to move on," he told Reuters.

Former armed forces minister Doug Henderson was quoted as saying the picture showed Harry was "not suitable" for the army.

Harry, who is due to train at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst this year, is known as a royal "wild child" and has admitted smoking cannabis and under-age drinking.

Harry was left alone by the British media for several years after the death of his mother in a Paris car crash in 1997, but has come in for criticism in the last few months. Last October, he scuffled with photographers outside a London nightclub.
