pac-man So no one's going to mention the piss poor job the umpire's did? Seriously, though, congrats to the Phillies.

WhiteRat Congrats, Philly fans. Now can you stop bitching about your championship drought?

Of course! It's Philadelphia, what did you expect?

It wasn't a real boo - you wouldn't have had to ask - but it was more of a good natured "Yeah, thanks for the trophy and all, but we can't cheer for the guy that made us play the top half of the 6th in a monsoon."

But, wow, I've never heard such a cheer for a Phillies manager (Charlie Manuel) in my life. Danny Ozark managed some of the best teams of the late seventies, and he was ALWAYS roundly catcalled by the Phaithphul.

And, Yes, PG, I was wound tighter than the proverbial drum. Especialy since the Rays tied it again in the top of the 7th with Baldelli's homer. And Lidge had a history of making easy saves into relatively adventurous affairs. But he really lived up to the "lights out" moniker.

I have to hand it to Tampa, though. They're not just a good, but a great young team, and they will be a force for years to come. Now, they've got the experience - they just have to wait 'til next year.

Pentegarn Grats Phillys!

EDIT: Did the Phillys fans really start booing Selig as soon as he got the mic? Freaking epic!

Pentegarn 2 outs away and the Phillys are up by only one. How hard are you gripping Colonel?
Oct 28th, 2008 11:47 AM
MattJack I don't give a damn about baseball, butttt I've been rooting for the Phillies only because the media/espn made them out to be this HUGE underdog. I always go with the underdog by default. Guess that's why I'm a Saints fan

Anyways, it's sooooo good to watch all these guys on radio/tv eat their words now

It ain't over yet though.

pac-man Stormy weather in Philly... I think the Rays still have a shot. They'll be fresh tomorrow and it'll essentially be 0-0 in a 3 inning game. Gotta give it up to the Phillies so far though. When Howard, Utley, and Rollins are on you really can't fuck with that lineup.
Oct 26th, 2008 03:17 AM
Colonel Flagg Wow.

I never thought I'd see the day the Phils would be up 2-1 in the Series, and I'd still be nervous about their chances. They live and die by the homer - have all year - and still can't seem to buy a hit with men in scoring position. Not that there were many last night, but still, .... an infield hit with the bases loaded and no outs?

Ruiz is looking like an MVP candidate, after hitting around his weight all season (.219 avg, reg season; .500 in the WS).

Colonel Flagg Rain is letting up, gametime looks to be in about 15 minutes.

10,000 Volt Ghost The world series of baseball is going on right now right?

edit: Let's Go Phillies

Colonel Flagg Hell yeah!

Phils-Rays may get rained out tonight - it's f*****g pouring right now.

If J-Roll can't get it going at the plate, the Phils will have a hard time winning three more games.
Oct 25th, 2008 06:57 PM
pac-man So, how about that World Series?

The MOVE tragedy occurred about 23 years ago. I was living in W. Philly at the time, and the fire, while safely far away, was near enough to make my future in-laws collective basket cases.

Again, I have no more desire to discuss this in the sports forum, or any other form for that matter. If EB wishes to espouse his views on the matter (i.e. that all Philadelphia fans are racist), then he can do so in the politics forum.

BTW, EB ever hear of Howard Beach?

El Blanco Hey, Adolph, whatever you tell yourself to feel better.

Colonel Flagg I know, before anyone else says it, this belongs in the politics forum.

Colonel Flagg Spoken by someone who wasn't there. I was, for both.

Joe Frazier was, and is one of the most revered sports figures Philadelphia has ever produced. The city mourned with great reverence the untimely passing of his son, Marvis, of a congenital undiagnosed heart condition.

The "blowing up of a housing project", was, in fact a C-4 bomb dropped on a warlike bunker built by a group dedicated toward verbal harrassment and physical violence against the community. The neighborhood was working-class and not a "housing project" in West Philadelphia. Think the Montana "Freemen" or the Branch Davidians in an urban setting.

The bombing was viewed as the only reasonable solution to the existing problem, and history has shown it to be extremely ill-conceived. It was organized and ordered by the African-American mayor of that time, and was botched by his hand-picked police and fire commissioners.

You probably also think that Mumia Abu-Jamal is innocent, like all the hollywood yahoos that demonstrate for his release.

You, my friend, are a bigot.

From one who lived through it.

El Blanco Lets see, a fictional heavy weight champion gets parades and a statue.

The actual heavy weight champion, one of the greatest boxers of all time, who actually exists, gets nothing but scorn from the city. Oh, he also happens to be black.

then there's that whole blowing up a housing project issue.

ALL THE WAY RAYS!
EB, I would have fallen over dead in my mom's underwear if you had said you'd be rooting for the Phils. You root against the Phils the same way that I root against the Mets. ALL THE FREAKING TIME. Don't give me this racist BULLSHIT.
Oct 21st, 2008 03:14 PM
El Blanco I didn't say it was a bad trade. I actually am just hoping this turns into another Babe Ruth trade. They deserve nothing less.
Oct 21st, 2008 02:15 PM
WhiteRat What's your deal with Ramirez anyway? The dude wanted out, they went with a long term option, what else is there to say?
Oct 21st, 2008 01:59 PM
El Blanco according to equivalency ratings, he isn't far behind.
Oct 21st, 2008 01:45 PM
pac-man Then obviously you missed the whole series of events leading up to the trade. Does "sore knee" ring a bell? If he doesn't want to play, he won't put up any numbers. I'm not disputing how good he is; I'm saying that he did not want to play in Boston and was intentionally sandbagging and missing time to get out of there. He would've been more harm had they not traded him.

And besides, he's no Babe Ruth.
Oct 21st, 2008 01:38 PM
El Blanco Manny hit .299 with an OBP of .398 and SLG of .529 as well as 20 HR and 68 RBI. Not sure what you consider "producing", but I think thats a damn good example of it.
Oct 21st, 2008 12:48 PM
pac-man If Manny doesn't want to play, then Manny will not produce, if Manny does not produce, then Manny's skill/talent/output is moot.
