And Seth, I think it's legal to have absinthe in the states, but not to sell it here. Imports are fine. |

Sethomas | I believe the herbal stuff has a legal limit of 35 mg/liter, which is enough to have an effect on most people. Nevertheless, it's still far below the classic recipes which had five or six times that much in them. The most cost-effective way to experience thijune is to buy wormwood, which I think can be legally traded, and soak it in a high-proof spirit for a few weeks.

Perndog | Does the wormwood extract found in health food stores have enough thijune to make it worthwhile or are illegal imports the only way to find absinthe in the USA?

the stuff is way too nasty for me. Some friends of mine used to make it from freshly harvested wormwood. it gave me a headache and 10000X my senstivity to light. the flashing 12:00 on my VCR was like a floodlight in my living room. ick. |

The chemical is called Thijune, though practically every source has a different spelling for it. In Spain, Austria, and Czech Republic it can be sold with up to 35 mg/liter of Thijune, but by adding my own bulk wormwood I hope to get that level well over 200 as it was consumed in the 1890s. Thijune has the exact same chemical structure as THC and is known to cause euphoria and hallucinations. And seizures/death, but I'm FEARLESS. |

da blob | But it's not only an alcohol ° problem - the composition has changed, it used to be a very efficient brain-destroying drug, which the new versions are supposedly not anymore.

Absinthe I fell in love with this stuff in Prague. Stupid how it's illegal in all but three countries, but I'm bringing it home anyways. I bought half a pound of bulk wormwood to make mine even stronger, so that it's as potent as what Hemmingway and VanGogh drank. I bought some in Barcelona that's black and 160 proof. Yummy yum yum. |
