Left 4 Dead

Despite some stupid stupid things that have been done with game retail (dead demo after the game comes out? What the hell, guys.), this is shaping up to actually look really awesome. I AM EXPECTING YOU FAGGOTS TO ALL BE PLAYING THIS BY TOMORROW.

I love the loading screen, also.

Guitar Woman Nov 12th, 2008 12:51 AM

So I played it. It reminds me a lot of Zombie Master, without the Zombie Master and a hell of a lot less shitty.

I wish the demo were longer than 3 seconds and that the servers didn't suck. :\

OxBlood Nov 12th, 2008 02:59 AM

See, that happens when I get fed up with video games for 2 days and watch a certain anime whose main character is a certain someone´s Sig...gotta download it later on.

Top 10 things which make L4D rock:
1. Zombie physics/animation blending.
2. A.I. Director.
3. Accurate, powerful weapons.
4. Dynamic music.
5. Mechanics to encourage team play (smokers/hunters will almost certainly take down anyone that goes rouge).
6. Automatic voice commands ("Weapons here!")
7. The way pipe bombs attract zombies.
8. Tank battles.
9. Perfect melee combat.
10. Level design.

LordSappington Nov 12th, 2008 11:21 PM

My only real complaint is lack of weapons. It's pretty much just the standard 'Pistol, pistols akimbo, uzi, shotgun, assault rifle, bombs' fare. It needs a large array of gun, preferably real, or otherwise.

Guitar Woman Nov 12th, 2008 11:38 PM

It's a demo with two levels that barely last 5 minutes put together. Were you expecting them to reveal their ENTIRE ARSENAL in that time?

pac-man Nov 13th, 2008 01:04 AM

The demo is fun. I also hope the full version has a wider arsenal.

Okay, so I played the demo (360, green blood for Germany - yay) 4 times now, with two buddies on advanced. It´s more or less fun but I don´t think it´s worth whatever it may cost (50 $ over at your places, around 60 € over here I´d presume).
The weapons don´t have any good feel to them, apart from the shotgun and the models look really bad in my opinion. What I DO like is the AI-Director and the standart enemies, turns out the not only come running at you ALL the time but shuffle around and stare at walls. Earns them 40% Zombieness.

All in all I´d say it´s an okay game but nothing especially great worth waiting for. On the consoles that is. The PC Version should cost about half of what the console version costs and then it´s a different story already.

But I guess I´ll spend my bucks for the last remnant or something.

pac-man Nov 13th, 2008 02:48 AM

If the game is of sufficient length it would merit a purchase. I'll wait for reviews, but it's certainly a fun game, especially with a group.

Guitar Woman Nov 13th, 2008 10:59 AM

The thing that's going to fuck over the Xbox version is lack of user-created content. I'm especially excited to see what kind of custom maps are going to show up after everyone gets bored with the standard ones.

pac-man Nov 13th, 2008 12:09 PM

Good point.

Schimid Nov 13th, 2008 02:06 PM

Played this with three friends last night. Mindblowing.

We like Advanced difficulty the best, it feels rewarding without being utterly impossible. Expert is still fun, but Advanced just feels like "story mode" and expert is more like an individual challenge in itself. We tried to beat the second map on expert and it took us six tries, and on the sixth we got all the way to the minigun and the witch was there, meaning you HAD to startle her. We tried a strategy to beat her and, um, it didn't work, and the witch is basically a OHK on expert >:

It's really fun to develop strategies and ways to approach the levels--at the beginning of the first map, me and a buddy would drop down the glass ceiling portion while our two friends went down the steps and we absolutely flanked them. Another time we were fighting against a tank in the subways and decided to close ourselves into two identical rooms, two to a room, and shoot outside the window at the tank. It was hilarious, he couldn't get in.

It's really fun to close people out of the saferoom and see how many tries it takes them to get in. There were a few times where I ran to the safe room and my buddies stayed back to fight a tank, so I stole everyone's health and wouldn't let them in.

I only play as Bill, by the way.

EDIT - I also hear playing as a hunter is CRAZY FUN. I play the Spy in TF2, so this'll be great.

This happened to me the first time I played. Me and the black guy went down fighting the last horde brought on by the car alarm on the first level, and Francis ran into the safe room, locked the door, took all our health for the next level, and waited for us to die.

It was awesome.

OxBlood Nov 14th, 2008 02:49 AM

That´s not really the purpose of the whole affair, now is it? ;)

Phoenix Gamma Nov 14th, 2008 10:28 AM

Just finished downloading and playing it. Bill's so awesome.

I hate zombie shit because it's been done to death (hurrrr) but after watching Shaun of the Dead I was in the mood to blow shit up.

I kinda hate how you can only have one Health Pack at a time, and during one playthrough I decided to blindly charge in with a shotgun because Normal is too easy. I found myself backtracking to the start of the subway chapter to take leftover medkits. I'll try Advanced later. Hopefully that will require a little more thinking.

Also, some 12 year old shmuck was ordering us around. Eventually I ran off on my own in spite of him. He asked "where's the hobo guy?" and I immediately left the game. Fuck that kid. I'm Bill the Badass, and I'll wreck you.

MattJack Nov 14th, 2008 11:23 AM

After playing this with my brother last night I'm def buying it now.

World At War < L4d

pac-man Nov 14th, 2008 11:37 AM

The demo is definitely better on advanced.

MetalMilitia Nov 14th, 2008 11:53 AM

Fags. Play on expert. There used to be an "Impossible" setting too which was great but no servers seem to be running it after an update - it may have been removed.

Dimnos Nov 14th, 2008 03:34 PM

Comes out Monday right?

Schimid Nov 14th, 2008 03:51 PM

Expert can't be done unless the four people are working as a unit, not just random internet assholes.

I wonder how bad impossible was, jeez.

MarioRPG Nov 14th, 2008 03:58 PM

I played it and I love it. :D
I put it on expert.

Phoenix Gamma Nov 14th, 2008 04:47 PM

I dunno, Advanced was pretty easy too. We plowed through our first time, and on the second, we still had a pretty easy time until everyone quit and I was stuck with the AI, which didn't do jackshit.

Emu Nov 14th, 2008 05:27 PM

Is this a Steam-only release or is there going to be a retail version?

Just curious cuz I have shitty internet :(

Guitar Woman Nov 14th, 2008 07:32 PM

I'm hoping something along the same lines, for the same reason, and since there's a DVD case included in the BUY IT NOVEMBER 17TH thing at the end of the demo there's probably going to be a physical release.

Emu Nov 14th, 2008 09:15 PM

I played the demo for all of five minutes and when it wasn't choppy or frozen I was having a blast.

Also: GW, why does that screencap link to ArrowX's photobucket? :lol
