I was reading this and I thought about tulips.

Pentegarn Dec 10th, 2011 09:44 AM

Apparently the newest thing to be peddled by the spambot legion is cigarettes. No less than 3 threads about cigarettes in the last 2 days have popped up.

Pentegarn Dec 13th, 2011 07:46 AM

Wow... a cockfighting spambot. A spambot for freaking cockfighting.... wow

Anybody know how / where in the vBulletin admin you can change what user group is the default one that users are assigned to after they have verified their accounts? If it's possible, I want to set up the forum so all new users have to send me (or any admin) a PM once their accounts have been approved to enable their posting access. Until then, their accounts would be registered, but they wouldn't be able to make a post until they send us a PM to prove that they're actually human instead of a spambot.

I just went through the Usergroup Manager, but couldn't find anything about how you can set a new group to be the default group that newly registered users (with confirmed email addresses) are placed into.

Might be in the right direction.

You might have to set up the primary user group to not let anyone post, then once you okay they are alright by standards, promote them to a 2ndary group who can post.

Spambots are jerks

Esuohlim Feb 17th, 2012 01:44 AM

It's ridiculously out of control now. If I were a newcomer it would be enough to drive me away.

Esuohlim Feb 17th, 2012 02:55 PM

And every single spambot these days has a name that looks like the end of a Youtube url

Tadao Feb 17th, 2012 03:11 PM

AND ANOTHER THING

Esuohlim Feb 17th, 2012 04:00 PM

I WILL NOT BE IGNORED

WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH SPAMBOTS?

vBulletin plugin for preventing known spammers from registering. It needs vBulletin 4.0... not sure what version of the forums this is running.

Mockery Feb 19th, 2012 04:14 PM

Yeah, unfortunately we can't upgrade to 4.0 cuz this is a heavily modified forum made so it would work with the rest of the site. What I'm thinking of doing is this:

1) Temporarily turn off new registrations.

2) Set up a new "real users" usergroup that will have access to all the forums. For anybody who is a new registrant, they'll only be able to post in General Blabber and the Articles forums until they've proven that they're real. That way any spam is relegated to one of two forums only.

Might take a while to get everybody added to the groups and the permissions set up, but it's an idea at least. I'm super busy right now though, so I'm not sure when I can get the usergroups set up. I'll disable new registrations for the time being though. :/

NEW USERS: Any new users who want to register in the meantime, just send me an email.

MODS: Please delete any remaining spam threads. Thanks!

This is the end of days.

Colonel Flagg Feb 21st, 2012 01:12 PM

Lookslike the spammers are getting in their last licks

Mockery Feb 21st, 2012 06:50 PM

Some spammers don't post immediately after registering, so ones that already registered will still get some posts through. But this new closed forum setting will obviously thwart any new spambots, cuz they're not gonna send me an email asking for an account.

Or are they? :chatter

Colonel Flagg Jun 20th, 2012 08:21 PM

Wow - kolosteve really wants to sell us some watches. :o

Mockery Nov 29th, 2012 05:16 PM

I've now updated the forum registration page to really simplify things so that no spambots will have a chance of getting in. Now rather than filling out a form, users have to send me a legitimate email to webmaster@i-mockery.com requesting an account along with what user name they'd like. Now anybody can sign up for an account and moderators won't have to worry about hordes of spambots any longer.

Problem solved. :picklehat

To any new users: if your account isn't approved within 48 hours, send me an email and I'll make sure the account gets created ASAP.
