Report: North Korea conducts nuke test

SEOUL, South Korea - South Korean government officials said North Korea performed its first-ever nuclear weapons test Monday, the South's Yonhap news agency reported.

South Korean officials could not immediately confirm the report.

South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun convened an urgent meeting of security advisers over the issue, Yonhap reported.

The North said last week it would conduct a nuclear test as part of its deterrent against a possible U.S. invasion.

The director of South Korea's monitoring center that is watching for a test with sound and seismic detectors declined to immediately comment on the report. The U.S. Geological Survey said it had detected no seismic activity in North Korea, although it was not clear whether a blast would be strong enough for its sensors.

Yes I just heard about those weapons of mass destruction.

Who really cares?

Nukes are so cold war era. Get with the times, now it is all about cruise missiles, bombing raids, machine guns, and having a badass Navy.

As of right now, we still don't even know if North Korea is telling the truth about the test having been Nuclear.

I woud say there is nothing pratical we can do about this beyond saying we don't like it, and everybody knows it. The ball is totally in China's court right now.

Zhukov Oct 10th, 2006 04:58 PM

Does anyone remember when DPRK blew up that mountain about a year ago? They said they had a bomb then, so yeah, maybe they don't now.

We'll meet again, don't know where, don't know when.
But I know we'll meet again, some sunny day.

N. Korea has called the UN resolution a "declaration of war," and is threatening a second nuclear test.

What say you?

Grislygus Oct 17th, 2006 09:58 AM

If I thought they were serious, instead of a bunch of blustering manchildren?

Then I would say that North Korea is a retarded if they think that China wouldn't eviscerate them in order to protect their trade.

AChimp Oct 17th, 2006 10:08 AM

China will side with the West in any future conflict. It would be economic suicide for them to do otherwise, and China's always good at looking out for #1. They also don't want the nearby countries (i.e. Taiwan) to start stockpiling their own weapons.

The best solution here would be to start starving North Korea. Complete trade embargo, and no humanitarian supplies. Your army can't fight if they're gnawing their own limbs off for food.

I think Kim is going to be shutting the hell up pretty quickly:

China Openly Talking 'Regime Change'

The problem with this is that the population is damn near close to this point already. Kim Jong and his cronies will always find ways to stay fat and happy.

It only takes one country or a handful of companies to screw up sanctions.

But, as I and others have often said, China will pull the leash. They don't want nuclear war anymore than we do (no, seriosuly, we don't want it).

china will offer to smack KJI around in exchange for some more trading privaleges.

Have we given them Favored Nation status, or are they still bucking for that?

Im not one to approve of how the current US government makes decisions, but I would support the US and Japan dealing out sanctions. I mean, every time in the past when the US tried to talk Korea out of the production of nuclear materials, they havealways backed out of their agreement. The North Korean government has never kept their word for, and keep getting away with this shit. Im not suggestion that the US resort to military action, but if Kim Jon Ill is going to keep making these stupid threats against sanctions, they have to know that more than one country is pissed off at them for this (South Korea and Japan).

Zhukov Oct 17th, 2006 04:07 PM

China should invade North Korea. Quickly.

Girl Drink Drunk Oct 17th, 2006 07:08 PM

Now that I think of it, things would be much easier if China took action. They could do more damage to North Korea's regime, cutting them off in trade and accepting illegal immigrants.

Rez Oct 19th, 2006 02:41 AM

test confirmed, explosion the size of my non-existent basement.

North Korea couldn't successfully test a microphone.

Chojin Oct 20th, 2006 11:56 AM

lol :<

And yes, China really should occupy North Korea. It'd solve one of the biggest problems in that area and maybe even scare our government.

KevinTheOmnivore Oct 20th, 2006 12:01 PM

Kim balked today.

Girl Drink Drunk Oct 21st, 2006 11:49 AM

I'm pretty positive that his apology for the nuclear is due to the fact that he knows that the combined force of the US, South Korea, China, and Japan would hand his ass one way or another. He doesn't want to see his regime get toppled. Anyways, im sure if he doesn't croak in the near future, he'll probably start biching again like he's been doing for years.
