Good Graphic Novels?

I've been looking into writing a graphic novel. Since I know a lot of you are into stuff like that, I thought I'd ask for recommendations for where to start, since my knowledge doesn't really extend beyond Daniel Clowes.

kahljorn Feb 7th, 2007 01:53 PM

is a graphic novel a comic?

Fathom Zero Feb 7th, 2007 04:51 PM

A long comic or a series of long comics.

Rongi Feb 8th, 2007 04:58 PM

Zomboid Feb 9th, 2007 04:20 PM

I love Kamichama Karin (she's the girl in my avatar.) but it's kind of childish.

Depending on the kind of stuff u lik:
Action/ Fighting: Full Metal Alchemist
Romance/ Comedy: Kodocha
Comedy/ Romance/ Fighting: Full Moon wo Sageshite (Searching For A Full Moon)
Magic/ Romance: Sailor Moon
Cute/ Comedy/ Creepy: Yoki Koto Kiku
Romance/ Comedy/ Magic: Fruits Basket

I love Fruits Basket and Kodocha but Kodocha is Out of Print so u gotta buy it online.

Blue Fox Feb 15th, 2007 12:23 PM

Grislygus Feb 15th, 2007 12:33 PM

Books.

kahljorn Feb 15th, 2007 08:00 PM

I don't know lately I've been hearing that books aren't so great. In fact, I've been hearing books are downright bad.

that's why I bought a coat.

Grislygus Feb 15th, 2007 09:15 PM

Don't lie, you only bought the coat because The Party upped coat production again.

Blue Fox Feb 16th, 2007 03:11 PM

but he's asking about graphic novels

i read books too>:

Grislygus Feb 16th, 2007 03:49 PM

Filthy, filthy lies.

Blue Fox Feb 16th, 2007 07:07 PM

If you have no problem with anime and stuff, I would strongly suggest the "Berserk" series. Great story, characters and a lot of killing.

Sacks Mar 26th, 2007 09:54 AM

Gus why are you picking on a little girl? You really are grisly! >:

Womti Mar 26th, 2007 10:04 AM

GHOST RIDER!!!!!!!!!!!
http://www.amazon.com/Ghost-Rider-Da.../dp/0785121226

I just read this the other day, the story and art kick ass and it is also kind of wacky/funny/perverted :\

glowbelly Mar 30th, 2007 11:34 PM

listen to rongi, go with preacher. also sandman by neil gaiman is wonderful. pm protoclown. that's where i get all my suggestions and he's been spot on every single time. yup.

sloth Apr 3rd, 2007 05:47 AM

i dont know if it even qualifies but i really like 'jimmy corrigan, the smartest kid on earth'. reviews like to talk about 'existential angst' but if that puts you off do an image search on google, there are a few spreads from the comic.

Cliff Steele Apr 3rd, 2007 10:18 AM

read The Invisibles, it is the best thing Grant Morrison has written and I think it's on par with Preacher. Also check out The Mystery Play if you want something shorter and self contained

I was under the impression that Blue Fox was just retardedly gay, until she mentioned being a girl later.

Protoclown Apr 4th, 2007 12:58 PM

Preacher is my favorite comic of all time. Sandman is also fucking amazing. And of course, you can't really experience the graphic novel until you've read Watchmen.

Others I think you might enjoy, Miss Mod (some are stand-alone actual 'novels', and some are series, but these series DO have endings and are structured like large epic novels, though three of these are still in progress; I'm also staying away from the superhero stuff, as I'm guessing that wouldn't be what you're looking for):

Y - The Last Man
Fables
Black Hole
Pride of Baghdad
Blankets
V For Vendetta
Transmetropolitan
Persepolis
From Hell
100 Bullets
Goodbye, Chunky Rice
Maus

Also, I own Jimmy Corrigan Smartest Kid on Earth but haven't read it yet. My understanding though is that a lot of Clowes fans also really enjoy Chris Ware, so you might want to give that a look.
