Anyone else think Sonic Unleashed Looks Fucking Stupid?

I've already bitched about it on IGN, but there's no topic here, so here goes.

I enjoyed the Sonic Adventure series a lot, in spite of the hate it gets these days. I enjoyed Sonic Heroes, at least initially, before it grew boring from having to play the same stages four times. I even admit to Shadow the Hedgehog being a guilty pleasure of mine.

This game, though, looks shitty. In the first place, the senseless, skilless speed designs utilized in the GBA series and Secret Rings is a hollow attempt to play up Sonic's dominant aspect while ignoring what made Sonic great in the golden age--good platforming, and loops were there not as eye candy, but as challenges. Acceleration demanded running down hill; there weren't boost panels.

Secondly, not only is it making the same old level design mistakes, but also the same story ones. How many times have we heard the "Eggman summons scary monster he can't control" bit? Too many, I think.

Finally, Werewolf Sonic. What the fuck were they thinking? That's a ridiculous idea that makes the character look dumb.

So yeah, not a buy for me at this point.

There were, like, these things that would pop up and speed you up automatically before big loops, though. Remember those?

Finally, Werewolf Sonic.
What. :|

...so is he faster as a werewolf?

Battle Net Edition Nov 17th, 2008 03:14 PM

No, it's like a brawler game and he has Dhalsim arms that go all plastic man on the baddies.

Dimnos Nov 17th, 2008 03:30 PM

Every Sonic game after Sonic 2 looks retarded as hell. While we are on the subject of craptacular games... WTF is the deal with this Little Big Planet? Every time I see that commercial where he says something about "having this much fun" I lol. I cant see how a rag doll with down syndrome swinging on what can only be described as a cheese wheel hanging from a tree can be fun. Does that game even have a premise?

Sam Nov 17th, 2008 03:36 PM

AND WHAT IS THE DEAL WITH MARIO PAINT? I MEAN WHY THE FUCK DOES THAT FAT WOP NEED TO DRAW SHOULDN'T HIS GREASY ASS BE STOMPIN TURTLES AND SAVING THAT FUCKING BITCH PRINCESS FUCK "OH MAMMA MIA I'MA MARIO I NEED TO DRAW SOMEA SHITA" WHAT THE FUCK THERE AREN'T EVEN ANY CUTSCENES IN THAT BITCH FOR CHRISTSAKES

People still care about the Sonic franchise?

Worse yet, people are actually giving a shit about Little Big Planet?

Jeff The Ninja Nov 17th, 2008 06:07 PM

I liked the GBA sonic games:\

Im also happy that sonic is the only confirmed playable character in this game.

Nick Nov 17th, 2008 06:42 PM

YEAH, WHATEVER FURRY. >:

DevilWearsPrada Nov 18th, 2008 12:07 AM

Exactly what I think. this game is just sega deciding the mutated denizens of the internet need more fetish material.

Phoenix Gamma Nov 18th, 2008 12:09 AM

Sonic died on the Genesis. Sega's just been dangling his body like a puppet to make quick cash to fund their not-shitty products (Valkyria Chronicles). If you honestly look forward to Sonic games anymore, you're either 13, a furry, an idiot, or all three.

Battle Net Edition Nov 18th, 2008 12:38 AM

Can one just be two of those three, or is it a very strict rule about being the animal loving, brutish adolescent?

Phoenix Gamma Nov 18th, 2008 07:14 AM

I'm not sure if a 13 year old would be into that kinda stuff. Then again, when I was 13 there was already a pregnant girl at my school, so there's probably some kid out there that's into animals like that.

Playing the handheld 2-D games Dimps made and the dreaded Next-Gen Sonic for PS2 and XBox360 pretty-much killed Sonic for me. With something like Shadow the Hedgehog, it was a ridiculously stupid idea, and would still have been one even if it was a good game. However, I enjoyed the Genesis and Dreamcast Sonic games (at least the main ones; I'm naturally excluding stuff like 3-D Blast or Shuffle), so when they make a games around the same sort of good ideas as that, on far more powerful platforms, and they still end up loads worse, you get the feeling SEGA can't do anything right anymore.

I did actually enjoy Sonic Chronicles, but that game wasn't actually made by SEGA, and it wasn't a traditional Sonic game.

Nick Nov 18th, 2008 06:46 PM

I've always wondered if Sonic Xtreme would have set the stage for decent 3D Sonic games.

To be fair, SEGA still puts out decent stuff (Valkyria Chronicles has instilled a strong sense of console envy in me), it's just that the studios that work on the Sonic titles are usually really, really bad (namely, Sonic Team).

I seriously doubt it. If you've ever seen some of the final videos of the project, you'd see how disorienting the camera is (albeit cool) and how garbage the level design is in tandem to your newly downgraded peripheral vision. There are all sorts of things that would be hard to spot without knowing where everything is firsthand.

I actually kinda like the system used in the 3D Sonic platformers, it's just that SEGA can't fix shit. Homing works whenever the fuck it feels like working (maybe), collisions are usually garbage, and SEGA has this obsession with giving us gameplay we don't even WANT (if you ever played Adventure 2, you probably just beat the shooting/hunting stages so you could hurry up and go back to running).

They can't seem to understand that we just want to run (ex: shooting, hunting, driving, telekinetic floating, rubber-band werewolf combat) and even when they do, they screw THAT up (Secret Rings). Then the next Sonic game "will be the game that sets everything right".

It's like when you're telling a kid to stop picking their nose, and they say they're going to stop, but then they keep doing it.

EDIT: First major review's out. 5/10.

Sonic Xtreme featured Sonic before they redesigned him into garbage, and that's rad.

Phoenix Gamma Nov 18th, 2008 08:31 PM

So did Sonic 3D Blast and Sonic Labyrinth.

Thats all well and good, but the review doesnt say which system the game was reviewed on.

EDIT: Altough Sonic Xtreme has nice looking screenshots, i doubt the game would have been that great. Just the Fisheye lens thing.

Sam Nov 18th, 2008 10:21 PM

I don't think it really matters.
