What's safe on Kazaa?

My neighbor just got busted big-time for downloading (or uploading?) mp3s on kazaa, so now I wonder if I should just forget about file sharing from now on. My brother thinks that you can only get in trouble for sharing, not downloading, and that it only applies to mp3s.

Can we safely download movies? I figured we might as well help each other out in this thread. I will post here if I find out any reliable info.

Perndog Aug 15th, 2003 08:36 PM

People on Kazaa get busted for uploading, not downloading. You can download all you want, as long as the spies don't see you sharing all sorts of stuff. You have two options here:

1. Don't share any files; you can disable uploading in Kazaa.

2, the better choice: Use Kazaa Lite (also comes without Adware, unlike Kazaa) and turn on the privacy option, which prevents your computer from sending lists of your available files; people will still find your files on individual searches, but they can't just search your files. This will limit anyone's view of your collection to whatever is being transferred at that time (I allow 2 max uploads), and you'll be pretty much safe, since the RIAA is all about their "5% of users sharing 95% of the files" idea - they're only after those they can nail down with hundreds or thousands of shared files.

Kazaa Lite should also be getting new features to increase security soon. Good luck.

Your new role as tech support is very valuable, Perndog. :) :hatsoff

Please, Remember one thing..

KaZaA is a really hairy sack of crap!
Why?
1. most of the programs are like: LESBIANPORN.avi.EXE (size 44 kb)
Total virushole.
2. guys are spying on you, they see you :/ They download shit from you and then will stab you in the back, you will sit in jail few years.
3. Spyware that makes your computer crash :) even lite vers has some spyware! No spyware in KaZaA = KaZaA wont work.

MY FIRSt POSt!! weeeeee i am dee smartest maan in dee woorld

Schimid Aug 16th, 2003 05:02 AM

...>:

Although Kazaa Lite is probably the better choice, I have WinMX now. Sure, you're remotely queued for about 95% of the downloads, but they come in fast.

The layout is good too, if you have MusicMatch Jukebox running constantly and hidden on the side of the screen.

Perndog Aug 16th, 2003 05:20 AM

First, Kazaa Lite isn't a "lite version" of Kazaa, it's a free ripoff by people who were pissed off at Kazaa for including adware. And neither Kazaa nor Kazaa Lite contains any spyware; Kazaa Lite is a not-for-profit project, so its creators wouldn't have any reason to add spyware, and Kazaa has enough no-spyware guarantees that a thousand hackers would have them in court over it already. You download Kazaa Lite, you install Kazaa Lite, and you don't get any other programs with it. Yes, you can find out some info about other people's computers with it, if you have some extra software. No shit - it's a file sharing system, you're directly connecting to someone else's machine. But you can protect yourself from this with the aforementioned protection method. And there's no damn way it can be called spyware. Kazaa Lite has never made my computer crash or done anything worse than suck up some of my CPU cycles, and I am running a bastard copy of Windows XP that is the most unstable piece of shit I've ever witnessed. Get a clue. >:

There are, at any given time, at least a half a billion files available on the network shared by Kazaa, Grokster, Morpheus, etc. You can find nearly any program, song, movie, or maybe TV show that you're looking for, and there are few other places you can access such a huge library of material and nowhere as reliably (because there are simply more people using Kazaa). Of these, yes, there is going to be quite a bit of useless or harmful shit. Any file sharing network is going to have bogus files on it, that's why you have to have an average 8 year old's competence to use one safely. Anyone dumb enough to download any of the following is a stupid asshole who deserves to get a computer virus (among other things). >:

1. A PROGRAM that says it's porn. People who want porn search for images or videos, not programs. :rolleyes
2. Any program that's supposed to do anything useful that is 44k.
3. Any file with a sneaky double extention (.avi.EXE) if you don't know what to do with it.

Your first post! Weeee, you totally wasted it on eing an ignorant douche bag. The door's over there. :newbie

Bestrest Aug 16th, 2003 08:14 AM

wow dude, rough start :)

Anyway: You were new also, noone is saved by being new.

OK:

1. ANYTHING may be virus, even game rips, you never may be sure. They maybe have adden few "trainers"(viruses).
(BTW: i downloaded Mortal Kombat 4 from KaZaA and the trainer was with CIH virus :P )
2. OK, MAYBE i forgot to mention that i have heard a rumour about that Lite has spyware.
3. I hate you, screw you.

I kind of left it to common sense that you should scan every executable that you download. I guess some people don't even get that, which further supports my theory that you're stupid. Understand this. I'm not picking on you because you're new, I'm picking on you because you're new and you're a complete moron. Got it?

"Trainers" are cheat programs for computer games. Once again, educate yourself before saying something and you might come across as a little less painfully stupid.

Right. You signed up four months before I did so you get to tell me what to do. :rolleyes Piss off. You want to harass me, go start a Perndog hate thread in Mock Wars or wait til I really am being an idiot, don't just randomly attack me. It gets tedious.

Yes it does, you pretentious retard. It's called Cydoor, and Kazaa won't operate without it installed.

imported_Wicked Steve Aug 17th, 2003 02:19 AM

:rolleyes

Perndog Aug 17th, 2003 02:20 AM

Cydoor is a banner service that Kazaa uses. It downloads ads and displays them in Kazaa, randomly replacing them and accessing the server for new banners. The only information it sends back to the server is a list of the banners displayed, the frequency of each, and any clicks to the ads. No information about the user's computer is sent or is available to the server.

Thus, Cydoor is annoying but harmless adware, not spyware. As I said, there are enough no-spyware guarantees on Kazaa's site and enough competent users around that if Kazaa did include anything that could possibly be seen as spyware there would be lawsuits galore by now.

Now, next time you want to call someone a pretentious retard, make sure they're full of shit first. >:

Anonymous Aug 17th, 2003 03:24 AM

How about I do whatever I want and don't come off as a contestant on Beat The Geeks, you raving shit stabber?

Perndog Aug 17th, 2003 03:27 AM

Go for it. Just don't expect any respect. If someone posts like they know what they're talking about, and they don't, I'm going to correct them. Deal with it. At least I posted in this thread to be helpful.

Let me tell you a small & sad story.

Cydoor is a spyware, yes it is, becouse you wanted ONLY KaZaA BUT you got Cydoor(spyware) and other crap with it! KaZaA wont work at all after you have scan'n'remove the spyware. becouse KaZaA NEEDS spyware to work! They need to make some crappy popup windows with Buy Now or Do you want an auto-replacement wallpapers? Even Imesh has some!. Use Edonkey or Emule, No spyware and works fine! Use FTP servers!

Remember: Sometimes you might even FORGET to scan the stuff you download? whatcha gonna do then?

ItalianStereotype Aug 17th, 2003 03:34 AM

hey pern, why the fuck are you such a pretentious cock? when in the presence of your betters, you will speak only when we say so. now please, continue with your desperate bid to look witty and cool and while you're at it, pick my cotton.

No, but the majority are. There are also products that do display advertising but do not install any tracking mechanism on your system. These products are not indexed in our database.

This is the point I was trying to make. Cydoor, while annoying and extraneous, is not spyware because it doesn't do anything but display ads. And since ads piss people off, more and more people are using Kazaa Lite instead, which runs without Cydoor.

Emule is a good program, too, I just never managed to find the files I was looking for there.

And if you forget to scan what you download, what does that have to do with the place you got the file from?

EDIT: oh yeah, I forgot, you're all better than me because you've been on these boards for a long time. None of us knows anything about each other's real lives, so who are you to say you're better than I am? And how does anyone construe arguing about software as a way to act cool? If anything, it would make a person seem like a geek, which I'm not - I have Comp Sci major friends for that.
