ATTN: old people of the forum
Are you doing for a job what you always wanted to do? Or at least something you kinda wanted to do?
|
what is the old people cut off point :(
|
I am a pornstar warlord.
|
I'm writing and editing an online political site, and I recently got to be on one of the cable networks being a talking head and stuff. I get to work from home.
The pay sucks, but a year ago to the day I was in a job that was making me really depressed and ill. So, a year makes a difference. |
I can't believe you haven't posted any Youtube links for that. That's the norm here for anyone with a TV appearance.

Doopa, thanks for asking.
I managed to finally land the job of my dreams. I don't like to talk about exactly what it is over the internet, I know that sort of thing is dangerous. However, I can tell you that I get to make people's lives better and use my engineering knowledge of electrical systems in the process. I didn't end up in the military like I thought I would, but I am glad about that. The first of the products I worked on will release in 2008 (so soon now!!!) I am actually finishing my degree right now, but I switched between work and school several times. I already signed on for a permanent position, but I will finish school soon and start there. If you want to give me a call, I am willing to tell you over the phone what I worked on. You'd probably be surprised, and you can go check it out then and see what you think. I worked really hard to make a good product for everyone. :) |
I'm 31, I guess that qualifies as being 'old'.
I've been fortunate. I've done everything I've ever wanted to do career-wise. I worked in the funeral business, joined the circus, and traveled the world. I then helped to revitalize the downtown of my hometown by establishing an arts district and managing an art gallery. I also implemented youth oriented art programs and was a member of the Downtown Metro revitalization board of directors. Today, I still perform from time to time, my site garners international attention and I currently work in the local music and film industries. Come February, I am finally launching my own advertising/marketing firm, with full government support and funding. Career-wise, life is good. |
i am working a soulless corporate job just like i always dreamed of
in my nightmares |
Hmm. I'm in the period where the image is crystallizing that I'm not at all where I'd like to be in my life, and it will furthermore require a fair amount of time before I might be able to get there.
Basically, the first concise mental image of myself at age 23 involved me being in an illustrious grad school program on track to becoming a professor of multiple subjects. However, I'm working a little bit over minimum wage trying to get back into a mediocre college experience that I might eventually return to a better college experience, and thenceforth proceed to an illustrious grad school program. The recurring problem, however, is that academia has a strong aversion to crazies. |
Nope, not yet....but I have every intention of making that dream a reality...as soon as I get my degree.

Try this out. And actually, if there's a way to catch this stuff without a TV, I'd be glad to know. I'll probably be on again. |
Not that I don't love my museum job, but it doesn't pay anywhere near enough to support a family on and try as I might, I haven't been able to get them to give me a better paying, more serious job there. I am seriously looking at having to get a second job or a job in the private sector that I don't enjoy to keep my collective family head above water.
I want to be a writer, full time. Truthfully, I haven't gotten much closer in the last decade. |

what do you do at the museum, Max?
if this dinosaur sounds thing is successful, will that give you a better shot at a more serious job? |

I'm a staff assistant for the exhibits department. I do PO's, invoices and payroll. I also freelance my writing and performing to them on the rare occasions a creative project comes that has some money attached to it. I love the people I work with, and all sorts of crazy opportunities come up that I get to be a part of, but my job grade is very low and the pay is beyond crap for a guy my age. If I could get a job as a content developer it would pay more (not that much, though) and I'd be doing more interesting stuff more of the time, but it's been years since one of those jobs opened up, and in the current financial climate, if someone left, they'd be just as inclined to close the position as open it up to applicants of which I'd be only one.
The dino thing is a prototype for the idea of me video blogging for the Museum on a regular basis. A VERY hard sell, and in no way up to me. |
One of my Son's friends is an amateur film maker, so I'll ask them to watch your video and upload some videos of their own...I"m sure they'd be hilarious...
|
I am doing exactly what Ive always wanted to do.
Sitting at home and letting my wife work and pay the bills. |
Thanks, Cosm o;
And Alisaba, that... is... AWESOME! How do I work out that deal? |
I do'nt understand why it's so hard to get a job doing what you want to do :(
Life is weird. Congratulations to you bastards that do enjoy what you're doing |
This is one of those threads where Re tries to bring herself down, but brings a lot of other people down with her. Thanks a lot, Re.:(
And this is a post where I try to make Re feel bad so she'll pester Rog for the entire weekend.:) |
I agree with the Doopinator. Why the hell can't I get paid well to do what I do well?
WHERE'S MY FUCKING UTOPIA!? |
Not quite, but maybe?
Two and a half years later, I'm still at the job I thought I'd have for six months. I still hate the job itself, but at least for the line of work, it pays well and I have benefits now, which is why I've more or less stuck it out. I'm still working on finding a new line of work, but for the most part, I like where my life is. Ever since I've starting making videos for YouTube, I've made a lot of connections that I would have never made otherwise. As for new work, I'm leaning toward freelance or something that would allow me to make money and travel. I'm not even sure I want what I ultimately want to do for a living right now. |
