It's all about the technique. If you're holding your fist wrong, it's easy to break fingers, or your wrist.
Also, the skull is one of the hardest bones in the body. You really want to aim for the softer bits, like cartilage or flesh, like the throat or eyes.

Yeah, you can still be doing the correct technique for punching someone, not break your fingers, and when your knuckles connect at speed to their jaw, it will still hurt.

Jaws are not great places to aim. You need to have a good pain tolerance, or heavy fist to really pull them off; jaws are very hard, and jaggedy, and stuff.

Yeah; few times in middle chool, and several times in Tae Kwon Do tournements. It hurts like hell if you miss and punch someone in the cheekbone, or forehead. I actually saw a guy break his wrist when he punched a guy in the forehead.

So you can't punch the jaw, cheekbone or forehead. It doesn't leave much left to be honest. All I'm really trying to establish is that it hurts when you hit someone in the face, and I wouldn't count the neck as the face. I've punched about five faces for those keeping count.
