If you upload something and someone else uploads something with the same filename, does it get replaced? :(

Nope, it gets renamed. :)

Say if avatar.gif already exists, and you upload an avatar.gif
Yours would be called [1]avatar.gif :)

When the upload is complete it will show you a link to the image you just uploaded. :)

Well I used it to upload the header for my blog as "untitled.gif", since remote linking from GeoCities with the .txt extension appears as a red x 117% of the time. :(

UPDATE - If there's an image that you no longer need please PM me the filename so I can get rid of it. Gives more space for more uploads. :)
