What are your favorite movies?

Maybe even obscure ones that are just great. Animes are fine, too. Just looking for some decent stuff to get. Samurai movies or crazy shit are nice. I don't really know, I have a broad taste, just no romances. Comedies are good, too.
By the by, I saw a movie recently called primer that's good. the first 20 minutes is boring to some people, but it gets better. It makes me think of lost highway sort of. Iron monkey is a good martial arts movie. It always makes me want to eat good food.

We don't watch cable tv so we don't really know what's out, or what's good. And there's always the fright of seeing a shitty movie. Like what the bleep do we know. I fucking hated that. I'm sure it was informative to ignorant people, but other than that it didn't really establish any points.
Plus that bitch who said she was channeling ramtha? What the fuck? Ramtha has been ripped off by some other assholes who claimed to be his reincarnation and wrote shitty books(actually they are an okay quick read) where opening the third eye amounted to drilling a hole in the forehead. I guess quite a few spiritual people decided it would be nice to open their third eye with a power drill after that...

i love amelie but you said no romances, so that is out...even though it is really beautifully shot and all french and the gal in it is creepily angelic.

i'm not good with movies, so i would just say to rent the first season of arrested development and watch that because not enough people are watching it and it is hysterical.

:D

- Battle Royale is great, if you´re looking for something a little different. Its a Japanese movie about a survival game taken to the limit. 40 kids are put in a deserted island and the last one alive wins.

- Terry Gilliam has made some good movies, like "12 Monkeys", "Brazil" and "Fear and loathing in Las Vegas"

- The first Cube movie is pretty decent and original.

big trouble in little china is the best movie ever made

ItalianStereotype Oct 21st, 2005 06:14 PM

Battle Royale is a little too mainstream these days to really be considered something "different."

some of my current favorites:

Gozu - hard to describe, really. it's about two yakuza who go into a town where nothing is really right. the movie involves a lactating landlord, a halfbreed mancow, crossdressing waiters, a yakuza who might or might not be dead, the strangest sex scene I've ever witnessed, and some other crazy shit.

Electric Dragon 80,000V - done by the same guy who did Tetsuo, but a little more bearable. a black and white cyberpunk type movie about a pet detective electricity fetishist whose body has been charged with 80,000 volts battling with Thunderbolt Buddha who, as a kid, was charged with 20,000,000 volts and has had half of his body encased in metal. great flick.

Tetsuo the Iron Man - I'm sure you've either seen this movie or already heard of it. it's almost as good as Electric Dragon. a little too much art mixed in with the horror, but still a pretty rocking movie.

The Last Starfighter - makes you feel good about the 80s.

The House on Haunted Hill - the one with Vincent Price.

Casshern - the plot is so convoluted that I could hardly begin to tell you what it's about, but it's probably the most aesthetically pleasing movie I've ever seen.

Wild Zero - Guitar Wolf is an insanely loud and insanely crappy Japanese band. they also make a very entertaining movie. Aliens invade the Earth and cause the dead to return to life. people get eaten, genders get bent, zombies die, a very ROCK movie.

"A clockwork orange" because see people killing other people with an idiotic gesture is FUN.

"Dr Strangelove" Same reason as "Clockwork orange"

"Cannibal Holocaust" Cannibalism! FUN FUN!

"Evil dead" saga: absolute badassism and creative bone crushing, plus a pick up line: "This is my BOOMSTICK" Neat deal.

"Full Metal Jacket" Better as Big Brother, people going mad, but they got guns...

"Very bad things" Well... simply i like this "Tarantinesque" films, all but the kill bill saga.

Any movie with Zombies or with slaughtery.

King Hadas Oct 21st, 2005 06:46 PM

"Tokyo Godfathers" and "Vampire hunter D: Bloodlust"- The only anime movies I've ever seen that I liked (or maybe the only ones I'll admit I like). Tokyo godfathers is a comedy/drama about three homeless people finding a baby in a pile of garbage and then trying to find it's parents. Vampire hunter D is just nice to look at, be careful not to get the original one though, it's complete garbage. I guess you might also want to sget "Akira." Personally, I thought it was boring as hell but you might like it.

i immediatly dont like you anymore

also, i just saw The Squid and The Whale (it's about two brothers whose parents divorce and how it affects them). It's not shown in mainstream theaters because some scenes are pretty damn creepy (one brother starts excessively masturbating), but if you have any art housey theaters around, check it out.

I meant different, because the plotline is pretty original.

Geggy Oct 22nd, 2005 01:07 PM

Like retrokat said, cohen brothers films are awesome and fun to watch

After watching the original texas chainsaw massacre last night, I realize it's my all time favorite slasher film. It's cinematographically stunning and eerie. And Leatherface does a happy dance in the ending. Can't get any more entertaining than that.

kahljorn Oct 22nd, 2005 06:01 PM

Big lists there and I like most of what you reccomended.. I love Terry Gilliam and his zealous usage of midgits. I think all of his movies have midgets in it in some shape or form.. the only one i can't think that does is Brazil. But that had robert deniro, and he's what a midget would look like and act if they weren't midgets. He's like a super midget :( I heard one of the other movies he was working on might get remade now because of the brothers grimm's success. I can't remember the name because I'm stoned, man el la nocha or something. Plus monty pyuthon.
I like tarantino movies, including four rooms. Tim roth is hilarious even though he plays the part of a pig enough to frighten me :(

And thanks for the suggestions Italian, I'll probably watch a couple of those soon if I can find them..

as for the rest I've seen pretty much all of them. I like Akira and the other movies that guy made, and I like princess mononoke and the movies he has made(try perfect blue and nausicaa valley of the wind. They are both weird). Same with bruce campbell and some of the others. Bruce campbell's books are hilarious bythe way.

Hell no! Guitar Wolf is legend. Most of their material is produced way too loud for me to really enjoy, but live they were an amazing band. And just too damn cool.

As for movies I'd recommend:
  • Cure (Kyua), Pulse (Kairo) - both japanese 'horror' but not really... more like psychological thrillers, but that label doesn't do them justice
  • anything by Takeshi Kitano
  • Shinjuku Triad Society, Dead or Alive - yakuza/gangster flicks
  • Menace II Society, New Jersey Drive - inner city/gangster
  • Interstella 5555 - full length anime movie to Daft Punk's Discovery
    album
