That misplaced T had me frantically using google to combat a terrible feeling of being ignorant. I don't need that on a saturday.

See above. It's just what a young, wide-eyed, idealistic physicist in-training should be fascinated by. (and no, it doesn't 'defy the laws of physics'.)

I understand inertial propulsion, i'm slightly insulted that you assumed I had never previously learned of it. It's not all that fascinating to me either, but that's just because i'm more interested in the universe than physics itself.

also, i do still believe that every action has a reaction and every cause has an effect - so i'd be more than happy to debate that last bit with you. :)

Pub Lover Jun 19th, 2009 04:49 PM

I'm siding with Newton too, he gets my props everytime.

I bow before your superiour spelling capabilities, good sire. :worship

Of course, I meant 'inertia' but I don't expect anyone will believe me now. :(

Pub Lover Jun 19th, 2009 05:05 PM

No way, I spell terrible-like. However, I've been caughtout before by subtle word similarities in science. :dunce

Can we get back to being needlessly crude now?

kahljorn Jun 19th, 2009 05:05 PM

Pub Lover its time to grow up :rolleyes

Pub Lover Jun 19th, 2009 05:08 PM

I don't mind getting taller, but I have no wash with that dang ol' behavioral maturity thing.

kahljorn Jun 19th, 2009 05:10 PM

You're already tall enough considering your behavioral maturity level, mr.

executioneer Jun 19th, 2009 05:13 PM

i think getting space elevators to work and making ion propulsion more efficient are more practical goals to work for :(

Pub Lover Jun 19th, 2009 05:17 PM

No way, making money is the end goal. Making money quickly.

No fast profit in space, my friend.

kahljorn Jun 19th, 2009 05:19 PM

SPACE ELEVATOR.

Is that the one that connects earth to space?

Pub Lover Jun 19th, 2009 05:20 PM

No way, that would suggest the name is descriptive.

kahljorn Jun 19th, 2009 05:23 PM

IT PROBABLY IS DESCRIPTIVE BUT BEING AS THAT THERE ARE MULTIPLE DESCRIPTIONS IT COULD POSSIBLY BE DESCRIBING I REQUIRE QUALIFIFUCKINGCATION.

Pub Lover Jun 19th, 2009 05:26 PM

Because you're thinking of building one if the description is simple enough?

kahljorn Jun 19th, 2009 05:27 PM

YES IM CONSIDERING BUILDING A SPACE ELEVATOR FROM MY FIST TO YOUR FACE

Pub Lover Jun 19th, 2009 05:33 PM

Oh, you sweet talker. :love

kahljorn Jun 19th, 2009 05:36 PM

You're the one that's so sweet, honey ;) ;) :love

executioneer Jun 19th, 2009 06:33 PM

yeah a space elevator is a elevator to space, its cheaper than launching shuttles all the time (or should be!) + if we get efficient space travel we can like mine the asteroids or soem sh*t plus then people can vacation on mars or something idk

MattJack Jun 19th, 2009 06:37 PM

they should build a Space Slip N Slide for the trip back to Earth. Just sayin.

MattJack Jun 19th, 2009 06:38 PM

If a space elevator is anything like Sim Tower's elevators, they are going to be sorely disappointed when they find out how many lobbies they are going to have to build >:

elx Jun 19th, 2009 07:53 PM

No one can make anyone do anything on this forum. Except Publover. :hickmanchallenge

I acknowledge you as a student of science who has aspirations toward advanced degrees in physics. I approve - it's just that I find it too early to pass judgement on certain tenets of scientific reasoning as immutable. If that were the case, then we'd still believe the earth was the center of the universe. (Perhaps a bit over the top as an analogy, but there it is.)

Keep in mind that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. - paraphrased from Robert L. Forward.

Incidentally, the late Dr. Forward was a proponent of space tethers, a precursor to Willie's space elevator. We can't build one yet (we haven't invented the materials for one thing) but the physics is sound, and it would send the space shuttle to the slag heap pretty quickly.

You'll get paid more working in Engineering. This is assuming you will be sub-par in your work as your postcount here is too high for you to have done all the studying you need.

Oh, I don't know, If you're really good you could get a Post-Doctoral fellowship at Geneva or at ASU and look for planets around other stars. You might be the one to discover Earth II. :eek

Esuohlim Jun 20th, 2009 10:53 PM

I've loved cosmology and astronomy my whole life and Neil deGrasse Tyson is my hero and I watched him speak for about three hours in January and I didn't want him to stop :(. Also I shook his hand :swoon

But engineering does pay more and although looking at hundreds of scanning electron microscopy pictures searching for microstructural anomalies is fucking fascinating I'd rather be looking through a telescope into SPACE >:

MetalMilitia Jun 21st, 2009 07:02 AM

So far as space goes I think the real money's in Astrology. Become a new-age guru and people will pay you to sit about talking absolute bollocks. It'd basically be exactly like your life now but without a forum being involved.

Good advice to someone that isn't convinced they'll be sub-par at everything they'll ever do. Those that are really good get the fun stuff, those that are not so good have to type it up.

So someone finally mentioning it is invalid because they didn't do it when the problem first started showing up?

It seems to be happening more frequently now, and it bugs me.
